Eng Knocking
wow i havent been here in ages. So i go out one morning and a knock knock at 750rpm idle shows up. :( gotten louder over the last few days. oil level is fine coolant is perfect. keep finding timing chain tensioner every search online. and about time to change the chain anyway. so i think just get it all done at once. how hard was it for anyone to change if you changed it yourself?+
forgot to add looking at the eng you can hear it more from the top then from the left side of eng. and it gotten loud enough I can hear it almost all the way up to 3000rpm. so car is parked till i can take it to a shop or do the work myself.... any help greatly appreciated |
Well looks like i'm gonna work on it sat got parts in mail today
anyone in south metro denver want to come help or check it out? i'll try to take lots of pictures for anyone else that will need to do this before 200k miles |
Try using a stethescope to get a positive ID on the source of the noise.
A cracked flywheel/drive plate can cause a knocking. |

but this is top passenger side of eng. few vids on youtube of people fixing it sounds exactly the same. but doing basicly sprockets chain guides and tensioner and ordered updated idle oiler should be able to pick that up before noon. so $150 in parts and my car will be all better. still anyone that want to come check it out so you get the idea if your in the south denver metro area i'm working in parker |
Well 5 hours $150 in parts, got tired of takin picts and just wanted to get it done with. but alero back up and running new chain, sprockets, guides, and revised idle oiler. nice and quiet again!

Yeah, totally don't mess with an early ecotec and the timing parts. They were known for failing.

well some i guess good news since ive done the timing chain: my SVS light has gone off (P0420) cat converter operation below threshold bank 1 or the light burnt out .. gas milage drop a little to 24/26mpg this week instead of my usual 28/30. but all and all no problems but a slight oil leak from the timing chain cover gasket
