Hub Centric Rings
 

Ok.. so I got ebay ones last season and by the end one tire wouldn't come off. Come to find out, the ring was ripped to shreds (looked like it kinda melted in place) when i finally got the wheel off.


So I got Gorilla ones from a more reputable parts site. (Summit)

I know how to install them, but should I put some anti-seize or brake grease between that and the hub? I know my hubs do have some surface rust on them, that I'll try to wire brush off first... but as an extra measure... it wouldn't hurt, right?

No harm done... recommend using wheel bearing grease to beat the heat generated in that area. A thin coating will be enough.

wheel bearing grease? how is that different from brake grease?

i believe wheel bearing grease is a higher temp grease. are you positive they were the right size rings? we get it a lot in our shop where people take their cars else where and have the wrong size rings thrown on and the wheels hammered on with an impact gun and they are a pita to get off.

can i ask why you have centric rings on the alero? are they necessary? my sister has them for her rims (she has an integra).....but i dont think their necessary for our cars or else the site i bought the rims from would have sent them to me like they did for my sister.

So this brings me back to my question, why do you have them?

i have horrendous shaking from 30-60mph (won't go higher with it) if i don't have them.

As soon as i got some and put them on, it stopped. Then a short time after...it came back (a little) come to find out, one of the rings was mangled. Which makes sense now, as to why the sound came back.

And they are the right size... they fit snug, clean, and I got the size from our members here (who know more about rim stuff than myself)

You absolutely should have them unless the center bore of your rims is exactly the same as your hub, otherwise the weight of your car is supported by the lugs (which are not made for the job). I believe the hub size of the alero is 70.3 mm.

hmmm.....maybe i will order those from summit too.....i dont have any shaking though....i can go 80-90 with no shakes. But if it takes some weight off the studs that cant be a bad thing lol....i will def get a set....cant hurt anything....

unfortunately... it still vibrates a bit at 65+

...and its properly balanced with proper sized hub rings. :glare:

Did you ever think there could be a problem with your suspension? Ball joints worn? bushings on the control arms? tie rod? when its shaking its because something isnt right in the suspension or one of your wheels is bent.....one of my chrome rims is bent a little bit and i always gotta be careful to put it on the back. OR if your tires arent balanced right that could cause it to shake.

I had them balanced. A couple of them were off. They are fine now.

And my winter tires (on stock rims) have no vibration at all. So i know its not my suspension. I guess I have a slightly bent rim? :(

I have a bent rim now and my car drives like it wants to shake apart when I hit 65...thinking last time I had it serviced they put the bent rim back up front.

is it possible to have a slightly bent rim.... unbent? (smoothed out again)

I mean... i don't see anything bent on mine. They appear to be completely round.. but a slight ding in it would cause problems, i'm sure.

It can be done...dont' know to many places that are doing...at least not in my area.

The bend wont be visible to the naked eye.....this one guy at a tire place i went to had the wheel on the balancing machine and he spun it and showed me how it was spinning....then told me its because its bent a little bit. if the bend is visible then you would get more than just shaking lol

you have stock wheels right? Weird that one would be bent since we have so much sidewall on the stockers....i thought only rims with low profile tires were easy to bend. Guess not lol

Yeah it is, I had it done with one of mine when it got pwn3d by a pothole.

How much does it cost to get it fixed?
