Console swap

Hey I am looking to swap my center console with one from a grand prix for better arm rest and dual hideaway cup holders. I just want to swap the section from the shifter back and leave the stereo and AC portion alone. Has anyone done this? If so, do you have pictures and how much custom work had to be done?

bump

Swap a "W" body center console into an "N" body

Never did it, don't know anybody who has, but:

the W body is wider and longer than an N body, and the dash is different, so I'm willing to bet it's a shitload of work just to get it in there, but I doubt you'll be able to slip it between the seats in the first place

honestly you would likely be better off swapping one out of an n-body. better off going with a grand am or malibu. malibu is higher up and IMO has more storage, but grand am might be more stylish and pontiac-like

I only care about having a better cup holder placement. I swear if my wife spills one more drink in my car I'm gonna lose it!

I just helped my brother purchase a 2001 grand prix. I'm going to measure out the console and see if I can wedge it in there. If so, it should be pretty cool.

Good luck, but wouldn't the easier solution be "hey wifey!! NO more drinks for you in the car!"

How about buy her a sippy cup....Lmao!

Tim(tw0123) has done the Grand Am interior swap if you're interested in something like that.. Also the cup holder in our cars aint too bad.. I use it to hold waterbottle, fountain drinks from fast food places and coffee from Tim Hortons without any problem.. Just gotta be careful and know it's there I guess? I noticed that my 2000 has a cool door flap thing the front cup holder while my girlfriend's 2004 doesn't.

lonnie 03-22-2012 02:31 PM

I personally think that the front cup holder sucks.

Redog 03-22-2012 05:46 PM

So she's spilling stuff in your car and you want to go thru the time an hassle of installing a different center consloe.

Easier and much cheaper fix: wife+drinks= curb or her car ;)

The front cup holder (in front of the shifter) does suck, but it is what it is. Either do what I did, only bottles with lids in the car or use the back seat cupholder. just a thought

So the problem right now is that her car is a 2004 Envoy XUV. It has two cup holders and one of them holds her giant coffee cup, the smaller one holds her normal sized coffee mug and she holds her third giant coffee cup in her hands.

My license in Indiana has been suspended for the past 3 months and I'm about 20 days away from getting it back (hopefully)... Since her Envoy is a gas guzzling V8 and mine is a LD9 4 cyl, she has been driving my car for the better gas mileage and for the past 6 weeks her car has been in the shop for a slew of warranty repairs in excess of $5000.

In my car, her normal coffee cup fits in the decent cup holder, and I put one of her giant cups into the center console and prop her other giant one up behind her purse on the passenger seat.

But after I can drive again, I personally like the design of the flip out cup holderbetter. It will hold two 44 oz drinks side by side. Currently I can put one 44 oz in the good cup holder and a carefully placed 20 oz drink in the front (if I am driving in a straight line)

Can You Just simply Swap a Grand Am Console into the alero without changing much? Don't mean to thread steal. What would need to be done?

xXManwhoreXx 05-07-2012 08:40 AM

My damn arizona teas wont fit in the cup holder!

Both cupholders are rendered useless with the addition of a manual shifter.
My vote is to strap a CamelBak to the seatback, and fill that with your non-alcoholic beverage of choice.
