idea for a "axle back"
so i have been brain storming this for about and hour.
i have a 32 inch long 2 1/4 thrush glass-pack muffler that i got for free a year ago. brand new, never used. i took mesurements and found that it will not fit from the axle to the bumper. so i did some thinking (maybe 2 seconds worth) and found myself pondering a transverse muffler set up. what if i get a 90* elbow on the pipe that comes over the axle, then weld the muffler on to that. and weld another 90* elbow at the other end then a tip on to the elbow. It would fit like perfect. but the tip would be on the passenger side instead of the driver. id do a mock up but i dont quiet have the proficencies to do it at the moment. its either that or attempt to cut the glasspack down 18 inches and weld it back together. which i do not think it would be worth the time. so what do you guys think? |
either way will work but it's going to sound terrible
people generally look down on the bumble-bee raspy fart-sounding exhaust that's on every slow car trying to look cool |
i was going to do that with my flow master. weld in a 90 degree so the duel outs are facing the passenger side, weld on L shaped tail pipe to go out the passenger side and then put on a long S shaped tail pip to reach the drivers side.

LOL ^ after reviewing videos on youtube of cavaliers and sunfires with flowmaster mufflers, and magnaflows i came to the conclusion that either way glasspack or not its going to sound like a four cylinder. I cant imagine finding a muffler that will sound good while not being any type of raspy. keep in mind this was just an idea, and the muffler was free. If new york wasnt so stuck up about having a muffler on your car, i would just take the OEM muffler off and weld in a section of pipe with a stainless tip. i had the same style muffler on my 99z24 cavalier and it did not sound like a typical lazy cheap thrown together exhaust. |

Old video back when my car was supercharged in 2008: This is with a Magnaflow straight-through round muffler put where the catalytic converter was, and a Dynomax Super Turbo camaro-style where the stock muffler was. |
A glass pak on ANYTHING other that a 90* engine is GOING TO SOUND LIKE SHIT. There is just no way around that.
Plus the way your going to route that glass pak, it's going to look like shit too. Sounds like your free glass pak is going to cost you a lot of money to fab on your Alero. Plus without the cutout on the bumper on the pass side, it's also going to look like shit and possiblly melt the bumper. Flowmaster 60's are made for a 4 banger. Still sound kinda ricy, but not as bad as what your planing to do. If you NOT going to spend the money to get the cutout done on the pass side, then see if you can get an in/out same side muffler :awesome: |
Also if you just have an open exhaust, you have to have a turbo to make it sound cool. lol

Dude, NY isn't checking every car for a muffler. Take your car to a trusted mechanic when you have to get an inspection and tell him to let it slide ;) I have a straight pipe and still passed:lol: But, he's a cool guy so he let it go. Plus im not throwing off any codes so its all good. Do it the right way though.....listen to the guys telling you what to get....cause they know what their talking about. Don't make your car sound like a civic! |
alright. i like the turbo spool on the walmart video. my old saab sounded almost exactly like that when i had an open down pipe.
i wont use the glass pack. i was simply looking for a cheap way to be annoying.I want to further test my theory about the police in this town. i have had imports, loud and quiet and domestics loud and quiet. my domestic cars have never been messed with. but my imports got pulled over for the most unintelligent reason. (literally) the cops couldnt even come up with a reason other then my exhaust was to loud. but the fools in the ford/chevy and doge pick up scene are aloud 5-6inch turbo back straight pipes and they never get pulled. their exhaust is loud enough to make up people a block away or more, and mine has never been anywhere near that loud. but i will look into the 60, and see if its something i would like to try. otherwise ill look for the camaro style. Now what about just cutting the resonator completely out and replacing with a straight pipe (in addition to the 60 series or the camaro style muffler) Also, the piping is 2.25 stock correct? |
2 in stock. 2.25 will be fine for you.
|
this almost makes me want to just save my pennies and buy the pacesetter cat back exhaust. if i wasnt afraid it would rot out and fall apart after a year or two id go for it.

pascesetter is 2.5 inches i think and the borla is 2.25. also get a resonator.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=olKxjCjuS3U here is a full pacesetter exhaust with pacesetter header and catback. this is how it will sound without a resonator. |
pace setter's reputation makes me want to avoid them. id rather not have a header thats going to rot out, or an exhaust thats going to fall apart. but they did good making the "dual exhaust" look nice.

Actually I was at my gfs parents house Friday night, they live in Southfield off Roosevelt I believe. By Angelinas restaurant? I just went over the bridge to go to winterblast in Detroit, which only reminded me how much I hate Detroit

If you have a 4 cylinder then you DONT want the pacesetter.....it will sound SUPER raspy. If you have the 6....it will have a nice loud rumble....sounds pretty good but yea, it will rust out in about 2 years. |
yea i do have the ecotec
