manuel tranny on a 3400?

What do i all need to make my alero 3.4 auto into stick?

Shiwnath 01-25-2013 07:00 AM

A lot. You can either do a 5-speed swap from a Sunfire/Cavalier or a 6-speed swap from a Pontiac G6. The 6-Speed swap is much more expensive and takes extra effort. The easiest route is the 5-speed F23 swap. You can't use the F23 that came in the Alero's 2.2 or 2.4 though. It has to be from a 2000-2002 Sunfire/Cavalier "2200 SFI" engine because they share the same belhousing pattern as the 3400 which is called the "GM Metric Pattern".

You'll need at least the following to make it work:
- Manual Alero Subframe
-Manual Alero interior trim pieces
-2200SFI Sunfire/Cav Trans
- Tuning software

There's much more than just this, but I can't think of it right now.... Check this link out:

I've got a 6 speed 3400.

Here's a walk through on a grand am.

http://www.grandamgt.com/forum/showt...&highlight=F40

All my parts were new, I paid 4800$ for the whole shebang. 5 speed will be cheaper I think... The F40 (6 speed) will cost (if you do it yourself) will be about 3500$

WIALERO 01-25-2013 03:24 PM

Dang thats alot lol possibly gunna put a new motor in to mines got 227xxxthe lol

sleepyalero 01-25-2013 03:33 PM

Hey if it still runs I wouldn't worry about it.

I've got 180k on mine.

WIALERO 01-25-2013 03:49 PM

But 75%of my motor is new lol with parts and what not did fuel pressure regulator last night valve cover gasgets and intake gasgets and throttle body gasget :)u was fun but also a pain in the... :/

mfuller 01-25-2013 04:01 PM

The 6-speed is a lot of work, but very fun.

sleepyalero 01-25-2013 04:24 PM

Yeah it can happen,

Mfuller is the only other on here with a 6 speed 3400 alero. :)

WIALERO 01-25-2013 04:36 PM

6 speed would be really fun but itll cost alot lol gotta wait for my tax return and il do a swap

sleepyalero 01-25-2013 04:51 PM

Best of luck :)

Research research.

WIALERO 01-25-2013 05:01 PM

Thanks :)so lost my job due to the economy so hopefully taxes come soon! Im gettingjust 2 grand back :)u i could prob pick up a wrecked 5 speed alero if jawa has one at his junk yard and just do a swap like that :D

03glgold 01-25-2013 05:16 PM

not sure if you were meaning for the tranny cuz if you were that won't work since the 3400 has a different bell housing than the 4cyl aleros, however there are other parts that need to be off an alero

This is what you need for the 5 speed.

Nas Escobar 01-25-2013 06:39 PM

I'm not one to say much, but wouldn't it be better for you to get a job before you do the swap? I don't mean to be disrespectful, but $2000 isn't gonna cut it for a good swap, not to mention you always have to be prepared for an emergency.

I'd rather save up if I was you for a 6 speed.

sleepyalero 01-25-2013 07:38 PM

Agree, get a job.

Do a 5 speed, like no one on here has it.

Here's a link to the GA alero.

It's not a how to, but it's there. Basically everything will swap into it. Direct fit. All you need to do is go to the junkyard and find a donor car. I'd recommend 2002-2004 so you have the 2DIN radio, whereas 1999-2001 have 1 1/2DIN.
