crappy fm quality
 

So I've had my new head unit in for over a month now and I almost always listen to cd's, but when I turn it to FM it's almost completely static. Before the new head unit the FM worked great. I know that there was a "antennae power" wire or something like that hooked to the factory stereo, So is that my problem?

It's not beyond belief that you have a unit with a crappy FM tuner, too.

Overall, aftermarket head units suck for FM tuning.

There ARE exceptions, but if FM is a big deal, leave the factory head unit in.

Or, you know, check the FM capability before you buy the unit.

And I guess I never realized that each head unit could have a better/worse FM tuner. Oh well I guess. Time to get an Ipod

Sure. Almost none of the current manufacturers make $FECAL_MATTER for FM tuners.

I pulled a Pioneer unit from the stepson's Dakota, put a factory AM/FM/Cassette back in, and presto! I'm not picking up FM stations from Texarkana in Bossier City, LA. The PREVIOUS had problems with the "Oldies" station sitting in my front yard ...

You definitely need to have the power antenna wire hooked up. It's needed for the antenna amplifier.

Ok. I seriously have never seen anything about the power antenna wire. What does it get hooked up to? I'm guessing a switched 12v source, so it doesnt run the battery dead.

There should be an output on your HU for the power antenna. Some just use the amp remote wire and some have a separate antenna output.
