5-speed swap

So I want to do the 5-speed swap but what flywheel and other misc. parts will I need to make it happen

sleepyalero 09-08-2013 10:52 PM

Everything from a 5 speed alero.

Ecotecalero02 09-08-2013 10:53 PM

Ok will the flywheel work or is there some custom work I need done

Nas Escobar 09-08-2013 11:02 PM

Well, it depends on what you're converting to a 5 speed. If it's the ecotec or the ld9 (twin cam) engine, then all you need is everything 5 speed related from the donor car. Then it's just take everything that's not the engine out of the auto car, look for the hole where the fluid reservoir goes (forgot the name), get the clutch and reservoir in, and of course swap trans, and clutch. Flywheel should probably be the same from the donor car or a new one.

If it's the v6, then that's a heavier project since the 3400 didn't have it stock. It can be done, just takes a lot more...

don't forget that a pcm flash may be necessary.

Mines a v6 I'm just trying to find out what flywheel I need and if there's any takeouts that will work

Nas Escobar 09-08-2013 11:08 PM

I would go 6 speed if I was you. Get a donor G6 and just take everything out. In that specific instance (G6 into an Alero), I THINK (not 100% sure) that you can use the 3400 flywheel since the 3500 was basically a 3400 but without the LIM gasket issues and a bump in displacement.

Regardless, find the donor car, then compare the flywheel. I don't think you HAVE to change it, but if it doesn't match with the trans (won't cooperate) then it's a must

Ok I'll look into it thanks for the info also what do you guys think about a rwd swap

Nas Escobar 09-08-2013 11:36 PM

Sleepyalero has the 6 speed conversion. He would be a great person to talk to. The only thing is that he paid to do it, but he should be fairly knowledgeable in the subject.

Ecotecalero02 09-08-2013 11:40 PM

Ok I'm still taking measurements for rwd but my only issue so far is exhaust

sleepyalero 09-08-2013 11:43 PM

I believe the g6 flywheel was used. The 5 speed swap will be a bit cheaper. And i think you use the 5 speed fly wheel. I know theres a few people who have done it, but most are not on the site anymore, join grandamgt.com, gaownersclub.com 60degreev6.com

Im sure you could search and find a how to or a progress thread on one.

Tranny you need for the v6 to make 5 speed is the Getrag 282. Its out of a beretta.

Ecotecalero02 09-08-2013 11:45 PM

Ok thanks and do you have any suggestions for and exhaust on a rwd setup

60degreev6.com would be the best one... there's more people with knowledge of the 3400 there than anywhere else.

The easiest way for you would be to run it on the side of the driveshaft, not in the dead center where the driveshaft would go.

Ecotecalero02 09-08-2013 11:53 PM

Ok thanks ill check it out and ill post later when I begin the rwd swap

For the 3400, you would use the transmission, clutch and flywheel from a 2000-2002 Cavalier with the 2.2 OHV

sleepyalero 09-09-2013 12:16 AM

There was one member way back who was doing a rwd conversion. Dont know how much info he left, but feel free to search or look at pics.

I have no idea if he ever finished it or gave up...

Looks like the axle is out of a iroc z camaro, 9 bolt aussie rear end.

Guess he was going to put a 350 in it as well with a 700r4 trans.

Ecotecalero02 09-09-2013 08:51 AM

Interesting I'm gonna go IRS for better handling but thanks that was kinda helpful

slrr123 11-05-2013 02:01 AM

I am too looking into going to a manual transmission since mine likes to slip on a daily basis. As for finding a G6 in the scrap yard with a F40 in it good luck around my parts. I wouldn't undertake the project myself so the milzy swap is looking more promising for me lol. Oh and sleepy sell me yours so I have a head start lols. Or trade haha.

WIALERO 11-05-2013 02:20 AM

for the flash i believe hp tuners was required
