My amp and 10" sub are on their way, and I started thinking about protecting them from theft (I realize you can never be 100% safe). I called the shop that put in my remote starter, and they said to add an alarm they would have to take the starter out, and put a combo in...$249. That's definitly out.
I am thinking about using some frost king 1. to prevent rattles 2. to improve SQ and 3. to limit the noise outside the car. Other than not bumping at school or the mall and then leaving my car unattended, and shutting the sub off anywhere near my house, I'm not sure if there is anything else I should do to help keep it in my hands and not some crook's. I live in a decent neighborhood, so I doubt it would get stolen here, but with work or school, I'd rather be safe than sorry. Any tips? |
Don't think for a minute that you live in a nice neighborhood will mean you stuff is safe. I live in a good neighborhood and my stuff got broke into 3 times over a 3 month period.
Couple of suggestions: Disable your trunk popper. This keeps the theives from being able to get into your trunk easily. Build your box inside the car. That way you know how it went in and your the only person that should be able to take it apart to remove it. Use different screws with different types of heads for the subs and amps. Most theives wont come with a full toolbox. Use some phillips head screws and then get some hex head screws and so forth. Get speaker grill covers. Not only will these protect your subs from something banging into it but gives you a chance to use even more different types of screws. |
carry a metal bat and have a badass attitude......."yo punk you touch my car i'll kill your ass!!!" seriously though, what was mentioned above were very good tips......
oh yeah, always park in well lit places, helps sometimes, but not always..... |
Another thing I'm not sure if you have an aftermarket radio but always remove the faceplate if your leaving the car for a couple of hours. And you could get a blinking LED to simulate that you have an alarm.
|
Yeah, ALWAYS turn it down when you are about to park, or in your neighbourhood.
|
Like jamcllw said disabling the trunk popper means that they will have to beat you down and take your keys to get to your trunk system.
|
Alarm first. ALWAYS. If you can park you cark with the trunk (locked as previously mentioned) close as hell to a wall or whatever. This gives a theif limited space to get to it. I would also think about bolting down. Few theives want to take time to get on their back to get some nuts loose. Oh and close the seat if you leave it open during stereo play.
|
coupla L brackets should slow them down quite abit. But yeah dissable your button popper things. And remove the face plate.
I personally only turn it down by my neighborhood or by cops. |
Get it coverd by Insurance
|
i always thought the ins. wouldnt cover it?
|
Dido on the insurance. It is the best way to go. I contemplated a alarm but the prices are just too high. I called my insurance agent and I was covered up to 1000 on personaly property with no charge. The only deal is that you must let them know what is in the car. Some require photos but mine just needed a list and description. Otherwise he said I would need a proof of sales for any item stolen. My stereo system would cost about 1500 to replace as is. I normaly carry a laptop and digital camera as well. I went ahead and added another 2500 in coverage for ten dollars more a month. Personaly, I like the idea of spending the 120 extra a year and knowing that everything would be replaced with a new product versus a smashed window, cost in alarm that can still be jacked ( I will get to that in a minute), and damaged systems.
A quick story about my car. If you get a alarm then go with a rolling code. I had a thief break into my wifes car (using a viper alarm) by catching the code in the air. I parked in a Marriot garage for a Colts game. When we got back to the car someone had scared the thief away. Luckily he only managed to get the dash partialy removed. Here is was the kicker. I took my car to the dealer a week later because my remote wasn't working all of the time. He had placed new code into the viper alarm. It could except up to three. More than likely, he had plans to come back after I had finished shoping. The dash hadn't been to get my radio but to get at the alarm. |
I protect my system with the same means I protect my daughter with......an 870 Remington with a rifled barrel, and 3" Copper Solid saboted slugs.

I hate thinking about getting all my stuff stolen, the thing with my head unit, is that it just turns over and blacks out..I can't remove the thing..I kinda regret it. but I need to def. get an alarm and insure this crap i bought. When the kit gets painted and the rims go one, i will def. get more attention from hot birds and unfortunatly stupid thieves. I once got my car radio stolen and I was parked right by an elevator, and he had time to ram a screwdriver or something up my trunk and pop it open to take my subs and amp. Dumb ass got caught on camera though, but my stuff was in the local pawn shop the next week! but anywho..yeah, alarm and ins. is def the way to go

I was thinking. What if I mounted the amp behind the trunk carpet, where the monsoon amp would mount (if I had a monsoon amp)?
At least if someone broke into the trunk, they might not find the amp, thinking it is under a seat or something. Which brings me to another possibility. How much room is under the driver or passenger seat for an amp? |

Agreed, Shotgun, pumpaction, situation=sawed-off & loaded. For alarms i have a cheep alpine alarm that does what i need, remote entry and trunk pop, i leave it armed, it shows the theifs that there will be some noise if they try anything, i live in a small enuff town that everyone knows who i am and what i do, if they f*** around, they pay the dearest price. Like the sticker on the back of my rear window says " IF you value your life dont f*** with this car" The last guy who tryed to break into my car got 5 broken ribs, and a cracked skull.... BUT if reputation isnt your forte, get Differant screws as said b4, thats a REALLY good idea not to prevent theft but to reduce the chance they will get everything, allso kill the trunk poper, make sure your trunk is closed, and take your faceplate, with those mesures they most likely get anything worth while... unless they steal your whole car. :ninja: But the most effective thing to have is the insurance, im gunna have to get that as well because soon my laptop, xbox, new subs amps etc and screen will be in... im at about 1000 allready  haha |
The thing is with hiding the amps the theifs know about those places allready the only place they wouldnt bother to take the time to dig it out would be under the seats, because that requires taking out the seats. Theifs know how to trace wires, and contrary to comon beleif most theifs are Skilled in what they do and do it quickly, like what mikegett said they are out for specific things, and big scores, if you have some one shoving a Screwdriver in your trunk your dealing with crackheads, and nothing can stop them.

get a alarm and bolt your stuff down. bolting it down will slow them down. if the alarm is going off and they go to grab the box, and its bolted down, they'll most probably just take off.
also, those faceplate "security lights" jus advertise you have a aftermarket deck. i turned mine off. they see the light and think "ok, he's got a deck, maybe some stuff in the trunk" without the light, they may not even look into your car if your lucky. and if your like most people, that face plate is in your center console or glove compartment, or under the seat. |
If i see a flashing light on a gm car where the radio is than I usualy asume its factory since the thats what the teft lock does anyway
|
change your theft deductable to 50 bucks and every time your system gets stillen you get a new one for 50 bucks.
|
Hey I just got my alero. This is gonna sound dumb, but where is the internal trunk popper thingy? I've just been using the remote.
