Has anyone ever had any kind of front wheel noise. Its sounds like constant humming. it goes away when i turn the wheel right. The sound also increases when the car increases speed. Its driving me nuts, i have taking the front wheels apart countles times now and have found nothing. Please help!!!

Alero04 07-06-2005 09:13 AM

i had that on my way home from Halifax in the fall. it was a humming/whistling sound. NO idea what it was. it just went away and i havent heard it since...definitely frustrating tho!

Mine done that and it was a wheel bearing. Just do a search and I am sure you will find that several people have had wheel bearing problems.

black99alero 07-06-2005 10:26 AM

yea that is defineately a wheel bearing!!

ptrudel 07-06-2005 12:16 PM

bearing...unless still on warranty, fix it yourself...you'll save about 150$ compared to a dealer

brim 07-06-2005 10:37 PM

bearing, louder and louder from 20mph and up

determing the side, drive around 20-30 mph, turn the wheel left and right, if it happens when you turn right it's your left bearing, and vice versa

it's a weight transfer test, but it usually works

weight goes mostly to a side

wheel bearing at Autozone is 110 bucks USD.

pull wheel, 2 bolts on caliper, 2 bolts on caliper bracket, hang caliper aside

pull rotor, remove axle nut (36 mm socket?), remover 3 bolts off bearing, remove with 3 jaw puller or pull it if you can shimmy it off the axleshaft and get the axle back in.

reokace and reverse

Sounds like a typical Alero...

Is this the same thing as when someone says they have a bad "hub"?

Str8tFKNuUP 07-07-2005 01:37 PM

yes, in these cars, well at least the 2000 models the bearing isn't removable where you can just pull it out, grease it, and pop it back in. It's all one part with your wheel hub, your bearings go, your whole wheel hub needs replacing. I just did mine a few months ago.

P.S. I wouldn't suggest pulling the hub off the axle without a pulley, if you pull and yank on it too hard you could separate your inner CV joints and then your in trouble..lol.

 I am getting a noise too. Took it to the dealer and he said it was road noise and to get some good tires and it would go away. It's kinda like a thumping noise.

I might have a similar issue, but it is not a constant humming, and I don't think it is the hub. Only when I pull out of my drive, and over our curb do I get this sound, and I believe it is my front suspension. When I am on flat road turning I don't get any sounds whatsoever, and I know when I take it to the dealer, they are just gonna call me stupid, and tell me I MUST be imagining it.

Any ideas?

BlackJack 07-07-2005 10:01 PM

does it make that problem only when you're drifting, or all the time? heh

If its a thumping noise I doubt it's tires...lol

dbailey 07-08-2005 09:45 AM

Yeah that's kinda what I thought.

Seems to be only when I pull in or out of my drive. like when the suspension travels a bigger distance than just under normal driving. Thats why I know the dealer will just call me stupid and send me on my way.
