$500 is easily doable if you're doing it yourself.
SQL = sound quality level, basically you're going for good sounding as opposed to loud
RMS = root mean squared, basically the continuous output of the amp
For head unit i wouldn't get anything other than eclipse. They're the king of all for clarity, and they're pretty good price/performance.
