We had the same problem with our alero. The light came on like a year ago and my fiancee didn't have the money to get it fixed so we let it go. What probably is going on is that the bearing has been going bad and it damaged the abs sensor. Since it wasn't fixed the issue just got worse which is why it probably started making noise.

What sucks is she is still a broke college student and she still didn't have the money to fix it so I had to dip into my funds I had saved up for mods for my car. It ended up costing me $580 bucks to have both bearings fixed. I actually was trying to do it myself and would have saved half the money, but due to the lack of air tools I couldn't pull the job off. I almost had the whole bearing off with the exception of the three bolts holding the hub to the car. I actually broke my socket wrench trying to break it loose. When it broke I was like thats it Im having the shop do it. It probably would have taken me no more than 40mins to swap the parts out if I could have gotten those bolts loose. Oh well thats why I need to invest in some air tools next.

Now I just need to figure out how rain water is leaking into her car through the HVAC system and her car will then have everything fixed again.
