A/C Clutch

How do I know if the A/C clutch is engaged? My compressor is disconnected because the clutch or something died and it made TERRIBLE noises, so my uncle lubed up the pulley and rotating parts and it's been silent since then (2 years ago).

I've been wondering this for a while whether or not the clutch may be engaged although the system is disconnected and maybe it's putting load on the engine and reducing my power output and rev quickness.
