The stock radio in the 2001-2004 models is controlled via the Class 2 data bus. It is basically a serial data signal which tells the radio to turn on/off (and also transmits the data for when to chime, the Theftlock VIN information, etc..) The radio turns on and off when the BCM tells it to. That's what the deal is with the adapter harnesses. They emulate the radio on the Class 2 network and provide a switched output for your aftermarket radio and a little box with a speaker which will produce the chimes. Otherwise you have to tap into a switched power source when to tell your new aftermarket radio when to turn on and off, because they obviously don't communicate on the Class 2 data bus.
