The solder pads on the bottom of the board that are square and circle I think denote polarity. Did you make sure to note which direction the flat side of the LED was facing? If you put the LED in backwards, it will not light up. LED is a Light Emitting Diode, emphasis on the DIODE, meaning that electricity will only flow through it in one direction. As long as you get the new ones back in the right way, you don't really need to be worried about the square and circle solder pads.
