The thermostat could be completely closed and coolant still flows through the heater core on the LD9.
Sounds to me like there was a big blockage or a huge leak. How much exactly did you "top it off?" Also pay attention to your gauge. The red is BAD (260-280 °F) as in do not drive the car any further until you find a way to cool it down. It could mean the difference between fixing a small leak and replacing overheated components.
