I have a 2000 Alero that came stock with gas struts, switched to cowl hood which needed a prop rod. Then it got smashed, and now I have a stock hood from a 2002 Alero using the original hinges (from my car) with no gas struts. Any Alero's hood will fit your Alero. Just make sure you have the prop rod if you go from struts to strutless.

edit: I was just under my hood today. if you're going from strutless to struts, just get the strut hardware (mounts, and the struts themselves.) really, one way or the other, it's a no brainer job, but it's a 2-man job for lifting and aligning the hood (for at home work, anyway.)
