Take off your belt and spin the alternator pulley, see if it spins freely and silently, if it doesn't that's the culprit. You can do this with the idler pulleys as well. Also check the belt for low, shiny spots in the grooves, and cracks on the raised parts. If either of these are present a new belt is in order.
