You've had no trouble, yet. Anything that lights up other than amber for a t/s or side marker is illegal. Blue and red will get you busted REALLY quick.

Blue: looks like a cop car and your not a cop. BIG TROUBLE
Red: Red lights are on the backs of cars and also an emerceny vechile type lighting.

As for the painting idea, the red pin stripe sounds cool. All black bezel shouldn't be a problem. A few guys have that done already
