Its function is to block the higher powered bass frequencies from the tweeter to keep it from being damaged by the power required to pump the air to make the "ThumpaTHUMP!" so much of .. err, today's music (corrected what I WAS going to type!

Yes, it's a bit necessary, unless they're piezos. Which the ones I've seen in the yards haven't been.
