Exclamation HELP!!! 99 Alero won't turn over

My husband just replaced the water pump on my Alero. After following the manual to a "T", we went to start it. It tried to start and made a couple "clunking or clicking" noises and then I turned the key off. Tried to start it again and nothing. We can hear the starter engage, but just won't turn over. Anything to do with the timing chain? Any suggestions? Please...I can't drive our 454 Chevy which gets 10 mph much longer!!!!

Is it a 2.4 Twin Cam or the 3400 V6? If it's the twin-cam, you're awful courageous to tackle a water pump.
