Winter tires...

I need some good, relatively quick input on decent winter tires. I'm currently riding on stockers w/ 45k on them. fronts are functionally dead as soon as they get snow in the tread, and the rears are basically bald. I will probably be able to use them for summer (since its short around here) for another year... but i need some steelies with good winter tires on them pronto.

i've read bridgestone blizzaks and cooper weather-master... and others i should look at?

The 3 near death experiences i've had in the past 12 hrs make me want these quickly. its sad when i don't feel safe driving my car at all. even moving slow and pissing people off, i'm still sliding all over the place.

Blizzaks are decent...I would recommend them

I've got Cooper Weathermaster ST2s but I will be going with Hakkepalitas or Michelin X-Ice or Blizzaks next. The Coopers have a harder compound so they last for a while. I'm going for a bit more of a softer compound next.

Any winter tire will work better than an all-season on the snow and ice, be it a Goodyear, Dunlop, Bridgestone, Nokian, Gislaved, etc... You are just looking to use these in the winter months, right?

Only in the winters, yes. I was gonna hold out and get a good set of all weather... but i'd rather have a dedicated bad weather/good weather set.

only thing is.. i don't want to spend 100 per tire..

unles you find some lightly used for cheap, 100$ a tire sounds about right for good winter tires...i swear by them now, i didnt believe there'd be a difference untill i had to drive a car with all seasons...it wasnt fun

Well, figure on that $100 a tire and you're going to get about twice your average (time) life out of them because you're only using them half the year. Even the cheapest ones you'll find will be better than all-seasons. That is, if you have weather that justifies it (which is like 2 days out of the year for me, so i stick with my all-seasons)

I "ONLY" got with coopers, cheap and I found last longer, I had coopers on my probe last year all year and still worked great in winter, ddn't want winter tires this year for the alero, didn't have the money

haha. cliff.... WNY gets between 4 and 8 months of winter. between 5' and 40' of snow. so yeah... they'll get used.

im runnin my potenza's here in ND They dont do terrible, but we get a lot more cold and a lot less snow than you guys out east. I would like a set of winter tires but the cash isnt there right now. Ive heard lots of great things about the blizzaks btw. A friend of mine has a set on his 86 BMW 318 rwd, he lives in denver. Gets around town just fine.
