Engine Work Practice

Plan on getting a 3400 engine for Auto-U-Pull-It just to tear down/build back; pretty much get an all-round knowledge of the parts. I have the Haynes manual. Has anyone who's pulled a motor ever found it useful, or necessary? And once I get it home, I don't want it sitting on the ground. Is there some kind of stand I can use for it?

Yea they're called Cherry Pickers, like 70 bucks at AutoZone, I have one and they're a big help.

he wants an engine stand... cherry picker is what you use to actually pull the engine out if you don't have enough friends. my engine's not too heavy, my friend and i carried it around

Engine stand works beautifully. Drian it good and you can spin it around and work all over that engine.

Are stands manufacturer-specific, or generic? And our engines aren't 750 lbs, right?

not even close to 750..... they are ~400lbs

my neighbor had a big block 454 on the stand for about 10 years stands are really good to work with

Get one that is tall enough to be comfortable. I have 2 stands, an OTC brand engine stand that is good for 1000 pounds (overkill) and another 750 pound (overkill) that I got from advance auto parts. Both work but the OTC sits the motor higher and thtas easier for me to play with.

haynes and chilton manuals are junk for details but better than nothing. 60DegreeV6.com has torque specs for puttings it back together. If you have any specific questions, this forum should have enough experience on it to help

Me and my bro going to pick it up in two weeks. Gives me time to buy the stand. And like any junkyard, the body is elevated off the ground on old truck wheels. To snatch it out the body, can it be easily lifted out by two people, or am i gonna need a cherry-picker

No, you can't do it by hand with 2 people. I wouldn't want to do it with 6 people cause of the position its in. You need to disconnect the engine from the transmission first if you want to even have a shot at it. Its about 300 pounds for the engine alone.

I borrowed a cherry picker I got for free from my old work which was a rental yard and I purchased an engine stand at autozone to work on the engine. Both highly recommended for your goal

Haven't got the engine yet but gonna ask this now while the topic is still fresh. Someone break "torque" down for me. Apparently, the old tried and true "turn til it's tighten" method isn't ideal for engines. I can understand why, but do ya have to have a special torque-measurement tool or something?

Also, when removing the engine, is it simply "plug and play" for the electronics, or am i gonna have to cut some hard wiring.

um, you must use a torque wrench... lol.

There are 2 types, click type and a needle type. Both work just fine. Some need a torque spec, plus so many degrees afterwards. Torque angle meter is called for but I don't use one. Protractor is good for angles:P

I think it's a really good idea and great experiecne to do something like that. Esp since a 3400 at a u-pull-it will run about $125 with them pulling it for you

750 lbs ?!?!?!? A BBO which is all cast iron weighs about 600. The bottom half of the 3400 is cast iron, but the top end is all alluminm (sp)

400 is way too expensive for u-pull it........around here its 165+tax and u can get viper engines,ls1,lt1,5.0ho,v12s,454,307,300 I6,2.4,ecotec thats way more to list but thats general idea. turbos for 50. superchargers for cheap (too cheap for me to say )

my 3.8 s/c engine and trans was 300 and i didnt even have to touch it until it got loaded into the truck. so pretty much would have been around 30 for them taking it out for me. was the only engine i didnt take out of all the ones i worked on and removed from cars and out of the junkyard last year. i didnt remove that engine and trans because they have no engine puller to lift it out. anyways im glad i didnt because when got 5.0ho last and even a saturn engine had to put the engine in a wheel barrow and "push it through the desert terrain"
