Codes - strange

When I first bought the Alero, the check engine light was on and the car never heated up unless sitting still for a while. I figured the thermostat, and after checking the codes at work it said coolant too cool for too long, and egr pintle stuck open.

I replaced the thermostat (or rather installed one.. there wasn't one in there), and the check engine light hasn't come on since and it runs right in the middle all the time now, so thats good.

Anybody know what was up with the EGR code being thrown? Could the temp of the engine affect the EGR and it was fixed by putting the stat in? I didn't think they were related... but I could be wrong?

Thanks
Cody

lol. No thanks nate.

I notice my gas mileage is pretty craptacular. I foolishly thought in my head I would get similar mileage as my old 94 Beretta 3100 cuz its basically the same engine. Alero is 400 pounds heavier... I didn't think it would be that different. But I guess so. Especially after reading various threads on here where people say they get under 300 miles a tank. Beretta was getting me 400-415 consistently.

I am going to clean the MAF sensor and see what that does for me. 228k miles on her... I wonder when it was done last. I couldn't imagine it would run as decent as it does if that was never cleaned or replaced... would it?

I don't have any idle issues. Sometimes I have to crank it 2 or 3 times in the morning to get it started and periodically merging onto the freeway the rpms surge back and forth very little..(cant notice unless you look at the gauge) between 50 and then its fine after like 55.

Possible symptoms of the EGR or MAF?

Upstream O2 is new.

It must have been a quirk then with the engine running too cool and it threw a code for it for some reason. Because it runs and idles very steady with the exception of what I stated above.

?????? sorry but I don't agree, I removed it on my L67 and it does nothing to the driveability.........

But.. A STUCK OPEN EGR, that will make the car run like shit......

BTW when your last tune up was done ?? and the engine not getting to normal operating temperature will disable the EGR function in the PCM, that's why you had a code....
