Ok this guy at work and I where talking about systems and he was telling me about his new Sony Xplode stsyem he just put in and it sounded pretty cool
He then tells me he has an extra sub box and amp that he doesn't want now. The subs are MXT (or maybe MTX, maybe someone here will know). It's 2 12" in a box with a plexiglass cover. I've heard that the plexiglass ones put out more bass, and the amp is a smaller Xplode.
The sub and amp are about a year old and he wants $200 for all. I figure that $200 isn't bad, since the amp alone could be that. Of course, I'm going to look at it tonight and see what they are.
What should a watchout for? How do I go about hooking this up?
I also want to set up the box so I can remove it when I race, I figure this will be easy to do if I get the right wires. I have an idea about mounting for this too.

First of all don't buy a Sony amp THEY SUCK. I don't think any of there new one's cost $200. And if your going for sound quality as opposed to just loudness don't get a bandpass box or "a box with a plexiglass cover." They have a very limited sound range but it is the best type of SPL box.
If your looking for sound quality I wouldn't buy it. If your just looking to get bass in your car just so you can make the neighbors mad buy it. If it was me I'd try and find a good 10" or 12" sub like a JL W0. You can pick one of those up for about $100 and get a small amp like a 200 watt rockford and build a small sealed enclosure for it. You'll have much better sound quality with a setup like this than you would with a Sony amp and MTX subs. But then again I go for sound quality not SPL.

you probably won't like the bandpass box. and sony does suck. $200 is an ok deal, ok, not really. Try to get him down to 150 or so, after all it IS used sony equipment with no warranty.

They just suck. There sound quality is horrible and they don't push anywhere near the wattage that they claim they can. Try running a 2 ohm load on one of them and it'll cut out after about 2 minute of listening.

well if they arent designed to run 2 ohm stable.... then they will cut out, to overcome user error of underloading the amp. "ID 10 T" error.
and an amp, for a sub.. for cheap.. i dont think that d00d really will notice the difference btwn a 200dolalr sony amp and a 200 dollar rockofrd or mtx or whatever amp. any amp in that price range is really built with the same components.
as for ur claim that they cant push the wattage they claim they can, i dunno. i cant argue that as i have never tested the current of a sony amp. i dont have that kind of equipment readily available. ya know.
im certiantly not a sony defender, but i mean saying something flat out sucks, with very little expereince makes no sense.
sony is a huge name, and has been making electronics for longer than many of us has been alive. its not in thier best interest to make a product thats cmplete crap.

I've owned 2 of them so I believe I could have a very good understanding of them and they both sucked. I owned a so called 1000 watt class D mono and a 4 channel 800 watt. They distorted like no other amp I've ever heard. You turn the receiver up around half way and clipping starts to occur and it just sounded horrible. Don't go saying that I had the gains to far up and that's why I heard clipping because that is crap I know how to tune my system. And the amp I had stated that it was 2 ohm stable as being the reason I bought it. So I wire my subs to 2 ohms and I'm driving down the street listening to my radio and the damn thing cuts out. I often wonder why the Legacy amps look the exact same way as the Sony's could it be that Sony just buys them from Legacy and rebadge's them. I suppose it could be the other way around but I don't know. I know from personal experience that there amps and mid range speakers suck. I also bought them when I was a naive young adult that thought I was getting a good deal at Best Buy.

I have a dual ported bandpass box w/ the plexiglass front, the box is made out of 1/2" MDF and is very heavy (around 40 lbs, maybe more) but hits with very tight bass, I love it...as for sonys, Id buy something better, perhaps even look around at local circuit city's, they are having a sale right now on car audio, at least in my area, on the new alpine Type E subs and they have some serious power and are very reputable for lasting and putting the watts out they say they have....its a bummer circuit city dont carry polk momo anymore, got my 10s for $100 there...thats my advice, check out circuit city!

Sony's car audio is along the same lines as PYRAMID
Its compleate crap, Im sure my Alpine deck pushes more power than some of the sony 4chanels that ive worked with... i wouldnt recommend them to anyone...
BUT
for 200, its an OK deal, find out what line of subs they are.. they are either roadthunders (compleate crap) or 4000's the 4000's are O-K.
And yes bandpass isnt really good for anything other than Bass, the boxes have No musicality, so unless you like listening to rap, go single sealed 12.
Refrance hoooking it up, do you have an aftermarket deck or stock?
If you have aftermarket it could be as easy as runing power and gound... singnal rca's and remote... but if you dont it gets harder.. lol
You would need line out converters, rca's power/ground/fuse, and to find a remote lead.....
If you were to go with a Good 12, sealed it would be less than 5pounds prolly and wouldnt effect your 1/4 time enuff to worry about... but a 150poundbandpass may make a differance.. lol

/\/\/\ Yeah I forgot to mention that I have a stock deck.
I've had bad luck with Sony anyway. Just figured that maybe they got better.
I don't think I'll be buying this stuff. The box sounds cool but not the amp. I want a bit more than just bass

Your best bet is to listen to it prior to buying. He should be able to put in his car fairly easy if it was used before. The bandpass box can sound great but only if it is designed for the speakers. Never buy a pre fab bandpass. They are made for very specific speakers. If your Q's and Vas do not match what the box was designed for the subs will perform very poorly and could be damaged. The MTX subs would be decent but buy them seperate. Sony is one of the few products that I would never place in my car. I am a avid buyer of Sony computer products but the audio is just poor. The home audio is overpriced for the quality and the car audio is in the area of Pyramid and california. I just find it unbelievable that the company has so little faith in the product that they do not even have a website for it. If you go to sonystyle.com, the ony reference to car audio is a link taking you to crutchfield. If they have this little faith in the product then I willl spend my money elsewhere. But, this is just my 2 cents.
