Thinking About Subs

Im thinking about getting a sub not anything to much just one 12 to put in the trunk. Right now im looking at a Alpine Type S i can get it for 70 plus 20 shipping off ebay brand new. Any other recomendations? Plus what type of box would be the best for sound coming from the trunk?

A good box for a 12" sub would be a sealed made with 3/4in wood.

If you want something pre-made Q-logic makes a great sealed box that they sell at places like best buy for less than a $100. It something to think about if you don't want to build your own. Once you find a sub that you want you just need to look at the volume specs for the sub. I would think that most 12" subs in a sealed box (not a high excursion sub) would want a box of about 1 cubic foot give or take .25 cubic feet.

I've heard really good things about the Alpine Type-R subs. A 12" shouldn't run you too much more than the one you mentioned.

Thats' a dual 4ohm voice coil model.

I've got s 12" Pioneer IMPP dual voice coil sub in a Q-logic 1.25 cubic foot sealed box in my trunk. I put the back of the box up against left rear seat with the sub facing into the trunk (towards the rear of the car) For maximum bass just fold down the left rear seat-back.

Personally I prefer Rockford Fosgates, I've got 2 RF 12's and they make me pretty happy. Its good to go around to different auto-sound shops and listen for what kind of quality or just straight-out bump that you want. I you buy online you really cant preview the bass it can produce, so I wouldnt recommend going that route unless you know what their capable of. but thats me.

rf is cool. i agree with a sealed box too.

and one 12 is a good place to be at. get a good sub and it will hit more than hard enough to sound good.

both is what i have a RF 12" P3 DVC sub, 400watts rms, getting 300watts rms from my RF p301 amp. i can post pics if you like.

Well, it really depends on what you're driving your subs with.

Any specs on the amplifier? ie. RMS, ohms, peak, etc..

I have one 12 a pioneer 450w and a 600 fosgate amp in a q-logic box with the magnet out. And it hits hard as hell but no other speaker will work in that box so with the right combo your set.

I'm a big fan of Infinity Kappa subs. I'm "only" using Reference subs in my car at the moment though, but all the speakers are Kappas.

You can't go wrong with JL Audio. The W0's and W3's don't take an extreme amount of power to make them thump. 125 watts to a 12" W0 and you've got a real clean and loud sub.

Yeah no kidding, $150 for my set of 12's. I only have 150 watts rms running to each of them now, and they thump pretty damn good. But when I bridged my sub amp and ran 465watts to one of them, that thing thumped like CRAZY.

Gonna get another amp soon.
