Today i got JL 6 1/2 speakers put in my front doors and 6x9's in the back with a alpine deck. It was installed at the local sound shop and they got some part to fit the 6 1/2's in the front so they would fit. but when i listen to alot of bass like rap for instance when i crank it up I get a vibrating noise. I don't know if its somthing vibrating or if the speakers are hitting against somthing inside the door. I don't know what i should do, whether to put some dynomat in it and see if its a vibration problem or get some smaller speakers if they are too big.

it's the speaker flexing and hitting the grill on the door, mine did the same, i took it all apart, and used a dremel on the mount for the 6.5 to sink it down 1/2" or so...

Yea check for clearnace, prolly the woofer hittin the grillz, if not check to see if they tightened the speaker mounts down.. or if its the mounting aparati that are vibrating.

They actually make an adapter for that? Crud, I thought everyone was just makin their own, I would have gone with 6 1/2's instead of the 4x6 plates if I'd have known.....

Yes there is a 6.5 speaker mount that is made for 94 to 99 gmcs that will fit in the existing space and is even angled upwards just like the factory 4x6 mount. Will not fit into the existing clips and need to be drilled through the metal, but they should make installing a larger set much easier. The only thing that you need to worry about is the depth of the speakers. Just installed Infinity Kappa Perfect 6.1 components in the front and they are so enormous that I had to cut some of the existing metal out of the speaker hole to be able to get the speakers to mount flush against the grill. It was a real pain in the arse but it was worth it when I cranked it up for the first time and enjoyed the music the way it was meant to be played.

yes it's possible... like i said, i have the infinity reference series in my door.... not a whole lot of modding needed. or you could get the adapter plates for cheap. but if you have a dremel, you can do it easily for free.

but i think you'd be better off with components and switch out the stock tweeter.

If you have access to tools I would suggest pasting the adaptor plate in photoshop. You can then scale it to the exact size of your speaker and print it out. You then have a template to make your own. I would suggest a few points. Be carefull when mounting your speakers. The main cause of speaker defeacts is not from over powering them. It is improper mounting. The speaker MUST be perfectly flat when mounted. No matter how durrable the basket may be, tension on one side of the frame will cause stress on the voice coil. This means that if you have hacked a original adaptor to fit 6.5's you run the likelyhood of warping the plate.
I have a pair of eclipse componants that I will be putting in my doors this weekend. These are extremely large (7 1/4 for the total diameter) and have a depth of 2 7/8. The frame is cast magnesium and very heavy. I have a feeling glassing is going to be my only option. I may be able to make a custom adaptor plate to accomodate the size. 1/2 inch or 3/8 mdf could place the magnet away from the window. Hopefully, this would result in only needing to make a new grill. I guess I find out this weekend.

i made some mounts for my rockford 6.5"'s. however I used .75" MDF and speaker magnet still wouldnt clear the window.

so i had to add extra spacers.

then it hit the door panel.

so i put the speaker grills on the rockfords. this protected them from the door. however my door bows out a bit.

any suggestion on fixing this? i think my 6.5's are just too deep or something. rf website says 2.5" though....

I had the same problem, I bougtht the factory replacement spacers, 5.25/6.5 only to discover that the basket of the the PG 6.5 Comp R was too wide, and not trimming would help. It was okay cause the speaker depth was just bearly met, okay i couldn't roll down my windows. So i went with the 5.25 and they sound great. The only problem is that i have to take the door panel off some time and deaden the map pocket as it vibrates once and awhile.
