I've seen the little circle in the middle of the cone come loose on certain subs. A little glue fixes it sometimes.........Kind of ghetto but it beats buying a new sub.

could be the sub bottoming out from either to much power, to big of a port etc etc....ported or sealed box? what kind of subs? dimensions of box/port(s) ? what amp?

Dido. And check to ensure that your crossover is correct. If you aren't limiting subsonic frequencies it could easily be hitting a note that the cone excursion can't handle. This will tend to sound like a very drawn out note. Too much power will sound like a pop on the speaker only vibrating. Your gains can cause this as well. If you have the gain set over the limit of your HU or amp, distorition will be introduced. This will sound like back crackling or poping. Most notably with the amp on lower notes that require more wattage. A HU gain will be constant at the volume.

I don't realy understand the amplifiers rms. I assume that it must have a variable powersupply to achieve 500 watts rms through 1.5 to four ohms. If so, then you may be overdriving the sub. The recomendations for your sub is around 300 watts RMS. At five and six hundred they state long term reliability will be compromised. How do you have the gains adjusted? You should also concider turning on the subsonic filter. That is a nice sub, but the excursion is only .45 inches one way. Frequencies under 20Hz at a resonable wattage could easily hurt the coil.

^^^like he said, your overpowering the sub. i assume your box is a vented box, and its the one they recommend? your sub is over-excusioning (is that a word? lol) subs in ported enclosures cant take as much power as subs in sealed ones. in ported box, that amp has enough power to push 2 of those subs very well. also, do you have the bass boost cranked up? im not familiar with that amp, but if it has a subsonic filter, set that to about 30hz and your sub will take a little more power before bottoming out

id get another sub, you've already got the power

yea you are just over powering it more than likely......you can just turn the gain down on ur amp and that will be fine, or you can try another amp, something at like 300 watts rms........more than likely that jl audio amp is under rated meaning its putting out atleast the wattage it says if not a lil more........compared to other amps that are over rated and dont put out as much power as it says it does.....so not only are you over powering it, but with a nice amp too......so yea, to things.........new amp.......or just turn the gain way down on that one and you should be good 2 go.......wait theres a 3rd........grab another sub lol

Post what HU have and where you set the amp gains. Before touching any of your current gains, try looking at your amp with JL's tip 5 on the pdf. Turn off your bass boost. Try out your cd that has the problems. If it fixed the problem then great. If not, turn on the infrasonic filter. You want it set to High pass so that the lower frequencies are blocked. Set the knob to 20Hz and test out the cd. If you still hear it, then adjust the frequency between 20 and 30Hz. I realy believe this to be your problem. Lower frequencies need a long excursion on the subwoofer or it will bottom out. Kind of making a long thuding sound. If these don't work, we will see about adjusting the gains. Here is a question. Does your noise come about in low volumes or at high volumes. If you hear the noise at low volumes then the sub is bottoming out.

turn your subsonic on and set it to 30, are you using bass boost? how much and what frequency? you shouldn't need any boost like mike said......if your hard up for bass, buy another of the same exact sub

thats alot of boost for that amp on 1 sub......

whats the boost centered at?

is your subsonic on?

every 3 db of boost takes double the power, you need to turn that boost doooooown, if you do that, you may have to turn up the gain to compensate, but its safer

you will eventually (soon) deystroy your sub and have to get another one, might as well get it now and run 2 subs....lol
