6.5" in doors

Help!! i have been trying for two days unsuccessfully to get 6.5" Rockfordfosgates in my door.

BUT! from the pics it doesnt look like he used that stock black thing with the tabs.

Did he totally replace them?

I have been trying to work with that, maybe that is my problem.

I am guessing you bypass that black bracket all together. So do you make a plate out of MDF and affix it right to the door? that makes sense, but i dont want to go messing around with anything permenant until i know what i am doing. I am this close to taking back these RF 6.5" and getting some 4x6's !

yeah, just make a bracket out of 1/2 MDF. Its not too hard. use the plastic bracket as a guide. Sounds like you already know what to do. Goodluck

So, I make a plate out of 3/4" MDF. I drill into my door panel and attatch this plate.

One side of the plate (towards front of the car) needs to be up a little higher so i add some wishers between the plate and the door (or between speaker and plate?). screw the speaker into this and there should be enough clearance everywere i need there to be?

Anyone who has done this before help me with any dimensions or any problems that arose that i can try and avoid? I need to go to home depot tonight and get more MDF.

sounds right to me. add the washers between the plate and the door, u might want to silicone them together so they dont rattle, or put alittle dynomat on them. yes, screw the speaker into the plate and there should be plenty of room between it and the back of the dor panel. You might want to test fit if first.

Well, I got one in! Yay! My only complaint.. The speaker sounds Like CRAP! sounds much worse than stock. Highs are great, but the lows crack at the slightest amount of bass.

Any idea why? these are good speakers.. Is it becuase they are underpowered or what? its running off factory radio for now. I dont think its out of phase, i tried it both ways and it sounded the same. any help on why it sounds so crappy would be apreciated! here is some pics of the crappy job i did...

good job dood!, ya if the speaker is underpowered im sure it wont sound very good at all.

allright, ill wait until i get my new deck installed before i go getting worried that i blew the speakers or someting...

also, whats the best way to wire the stock speaker wire into the new speaker? Solder? butt connectors? Id like to avoid something permenant as solder because i plan on getting a 4chan amp in the future...

is the crackin in the bass from being underpowered or, different impedance? i mean the stock amp is used to looking at those two speakres, both 4 ohms where those in seriesor paralelle?

hmmm, im not very familiar with the monsoon system. I would have run new wire for all the speakers. I suggest that you run new wire when you put in the 4 channel. and using butt conectors should be fine.

so when you put power to your speakers, do you get a good siganl at all or is it just constantly popping? it could be that you have the neg and pos mixed up. my stock 6x9's were 8ohms, but as i said before, i dont know much about the monsoon system, if thats what you have.

Your problem is deffinately the monsoon system on the speakers. I contacted monsoon to see what ohm the speakers were (or at least the rear) and they are 2 ohms. That means that when you put a four ohm speaker on to the amp you will be cutting the wattage in half. It is 50 watts max at 2 ohm, so I am going to assume that you are probably getting 25 watts max to the speaker and around seven rms. Be aware that when replacing your speakers you should seriously consider doing a amp at the same time. Your new speakers will need about three times the amount of wattage that the OEM speakers required and will not only sound worse on the head unit but can also be damaged. Very few speakers are damaged due to excess wattage. It is under powering them that causes the distortion which in turn creates heat and blows the voice coils. So in the mean time, keep the bass turned down until you get the amp. Good luck.

King Asoka: I dont have monsoon system, i dont think. I looked on the back of the stock 4x6 and it was a 4ohm.

i switched neg and pos, and it sounded the same pretty much both ways.

would underpowering cause a cracking in the speaker tho?

i plan on getting a 4chan, but i dont even have my new deck installed yet. baby steps. baby steps.

sorry man, i dont think i can help much more. Ill ask a few buddys what they think and get back to u.

they maybe blown, try pushing the cone down and listen for a poping nosie, if you hear anything it probably means that its blown. If you can, go down to your local car audio place and ask them what they think.

Well, for anyone who cares i got both speakers in and sounding good. They sound pretty good even off the 7 watts the stock deck is putting out. When I got the doors on finally, i noticed that there was some rattling...

the 6.5's were smackin the doors...

So from here i see 3 choices.. or any combination of the 3.

1. sand down the door panel
2. put on my speaker grilles. This should obviously prevent any hitting, only problem is will i be able to get the door over the grilles...
3. add four screws around the edge of my speakers sticking about an inch out of the MDF. This should bow our the door enough to not hit my speakers... Any suggestions?
