knock sound with steering
everytime I steer for more than a 90 degree turn on the steering wheel, I hear a knock when I come back to center. This happens in both directions. Any ideas? Any "for sure" diagnosis?
I just replaced the rack and pinion about 2 years ago, and I think it is still under warranty from the shop that replaced it.
Thanks.

Most likely a suspension component. Which one I dunno. You'd have to get the car in the air and feel the joints for play.

$117 with tax. Strut mounts are also a very good possibilty.

check your front coil springs to see if one is snapped. that makes it clunk like that when you turn, it happened to me.

On the same note, check to make sure your upper bearing isn't seized up. If that happens it does the same thing... have someone steer the car and watch the springs, if the wheels turn, but not the spring, then all of a sudden it pops to catch up with the wheels, then its the bearing.
Otherwise if it sounds more inside the car, check the column.. isn't there a little universal joint in it? that may be making noise.
Wouldn't be a CV.. those click and make noises when its turned and moving (if it's the outer joint)

mine does sound like it's a spring thing, now that I've dealt with it a bit more. I thought maybe it was unseated or something, but they've been on forever...so being seized up makes more sense.

That only makes noise when you're moving, and it'd be a clicking or s it progresses a clunking.

strut mounts were worn, but not broken. I'll put that off for some other time. But what was causing the noise (somehow) was the sway bar/link was broken. So I got a new OEM sway bar (I wish I knew this was the problem before the group buy came around) and I got a new sway bar and link kits and bushings.
