has anyone swapped the front end (subframe, suspension, engine and trans) from a grand am gt into an alero? my 2.4L appears to be pretty messed up, and i'm looking at my options.
i've dropped out the subframe on my alero before, and i'm almost positive that the grand am gt has the same subframe.
a couple questions:
1. would i have to pull the subframe from a grand am gt coupe? or could it be a sedan?
2. is the grand am gt trans better than the alero trans?
3. what kind of positive things could come from this?
4. what kind of negative problems could i run into?
informed help would be much appreciated.

Is there really that much more benefit over the 2.4? To go through that much more work? I mean spy has pushed the 2.4 pretty far, farther than any 99% of 3.4's I've seen.
How is your 2.4 messed up?

well, it started leaking oil from the cam carrier gasket on the exhaust side. it lost a lot of oil before i knew there was a problem. so, it has been running on a small amount of oil. then, i lost all power and it shut off on my a few times. i think it shut off because of the oil on the plugs, but i'm not sure.
as far as a benefit of the v6, i've driven my sister's grand am with the 3.4L and it killed my 2.4L. the 3.4 was stock also, while i had exhaust, intake manifold, throttle body, and wai. so, yeah it would be worth it to me. i would also be getting the dhp pcm for the 3.4L which would eliminate the governor, and a few other things. these things aren't available for the 2.4L. that's what i'm looking at right now.
also, my engine has 125,000 miles on it from the previous owner.

The subframe is probably the same regardless of which engine the car has, I don't think any of the mounts go to it at all. Things you will have to do is swap out the ENTIRE wiring harness at least under the hood, if not in the interior. Also you would have to have the PCM cleared of it's security code data so it can communicate with the BCM and/or gauges and passlock. (might be able to do the wait 10 minutes thing)

the alero hast the 4t45 with the 3.05 ratio and the gt has the 4t45 with the 3.29 ratio. the 4t40 with the 3.05 ratio is in the malibu

Everything will bolt right in without a problem, but like Cliff said, there are some major wiring/electrical harness issues that you'll have to address. If you get a donor motor/trans, I'd highly advide getting the entire electrical harness and PCM to make things a little easier.
You can pillage either a coupe or sedan; it doesn't matter.
All V6 car got the 4T45-E trans, and all have the same gear ratios. The only slight diffence is that the Grand Am GT got a slightly better 3.29 final drive; other cars make do with a 3.05 final drive.

yeah, and in '03 up, they also upgraded a few of the "weaker" tranny parts, so if you can afford it, swap that out too.
