4500-6500k will be the brightest, anything higher than that the blueer it gets except those 12k those are rediculous purple. I got mine off ebay too, but one of my ballasts is effed so only one light is workin, Im gonna fix it tomorrow

Agreed. I had some 8000k bulbs (might've been 8500k) anyways I didn't like em. They were really white but they didn't have enough lumens. I've got the silverstars right now and I love em. I think they're around 6000k (but I could be wrong).

I owuldnt even comapre headlight bulbs to Hids to different bulb watts and hids are alot more brighter and more to see

HID's project the light out a lot farther than conventional headlight bulbs. My silverstars dont even compare to how bright 12k HID lamps are. Now compare them to 4300K and be prepared to light everything up as clear as day.

I myself am trying to decide on either 6K or 8K when I do buy the HID kit. I am thinking of using 6k since I want some blue tint to the light.

since the kelvin scale is the same, then why do some 8k HIDs produce a different color than another company's 8k HID?

I am getting to confused with the above subject that I am just planning on saving the HIDs for some rainy day and just focusing on my current "Hair-Dryer" Project.

im gettin hid's tomorrow, i want them to be noticeably blue and maybe a bit purple, my buddys are saying that 6000k will be blue, but im not sure, what do you guys think

Thats simple..

8000k refers to arc temperature colour... its misleading..

Companies colour differ because of the metals disolved into the HID bulbs..

the kelvins refer to TEMP. colour.. at this temp, its this colour.. and so on.. the scale is set and does not change.. its a constant..

What changes is the companies attempt to get as close as they can to the colour by using disolved metals in the bulb..

HIDS are all basically the same voltage give or take.

So the kelvin scale doesnt exactly make sense because the kelvin temp scale directly correlates to arc'ing voltage temp.

they are mimic'ing the colour not by voltage, but by metals in the bulb that when high voltage runs through it, it changes colour according to the metals..

For example, white HIDS (4000k-5000k) use little or no disolved metals..

Arc'ing voltage (electricity) is by nature white..

Now we wont get into details about lumens, because lumens are based on the yellow spectrum to white.. if I dive into details, it will further confuse you all..

Yellow HIDS have no metals, and are actually arc'ing at a lower voltage..

I got 8000k, they are blue.. and in the daytime they actually seem a bit purple..

My buddy has 6500k they are kinda blue to more white..

If your going for blue.. 8 is the way to go

HIDs are essentially the same as floresent tubes...

and are EXACTLY the same as street lights..


Metal halide, sodium halide...

Those are two typical street light styles

Sodium halides are reddish..(most popular)

Metal halides are blue..

They are just bigger.. and more voltage.. bigger ballasts.. and so on..

So in essence our hids are most like metal halide.. because we have disolved metals... no sodium... (Salt)

if you got, or getting hids.. look at the bulbs, they have crap in them..

I've had some that you could even see a ball of dark dirt.. presumably mercury and tugsten.. phosphorous is the white shit all over the inside..
which is a metal..

All that crap turns into a gas to promote arcing.. and colours..

Thats why HIDs have a warm up time.. time for the metals to turn gaseous..
