I've been reading of two different issues with the bearings. One is mechanical failure where you hear a grinding or whirring noise that speeds up and slows down with the speed of the car. Also if you take a hard right hand corner and the noise gets louder then it's your drivers side bearing that is failing and visa versa.
I didn't have any noise but my Check Vehicle/Track Off/ABS lights would come on five minutes after starting my car and driving away. This is the speed sensor inside the bearing hub that has failed. I determined which one with an Ohm meeter. 1050 is a good reading, 0 is a failed sensor.
The bearing and hub is an entire assebly. You have to take of your caliper and rotor then the hub comes off the axel.
If you've done brakes it not a bad job.
btw, I learned everything I know about alero wheel bearings from this site. I was able to diagnose the correct one and change it, so do some searching then ask specific questions when you are ready to start.
Oh, and don't leave it too long.
