Here is a picture from Marc's appearance at ASS'07 with his homemade OSV nose. This will give you an idea what Marc is talking about.

Talking

okay powerlifter, with all the rumors on price lets talk about supply and demand here.

First of all you currently can assume position as monopolist on the market for the OSV kit. Now with this position you have ask yourself, how will you structure the price because demand IS THERE. Of couse we have to narrow it down to either the full kit or the lip kit. Now, dont try and set a set price for the kit just because you are the monopolist and you can say what price you want. Otherwise your revenue wont see the light of day. Im sure you understand the concept of a group purchase right? Okay will once you gather the figures for the variable and fixed cost of producing the kits, you can then set up how many kits to sell at what price to see your revenue exceed you total cost. Then your almost there, you can then begin to see if producing an additional kit at X would decrease revenue below total cost. If you need help on this I can structure a graph or diagram for you but of course at the expense of a kit

from what he said earlier 20 k for molds if its just lips maybe 150 200 bucks in glass lets say he wants to make a 100 a kit profit. and say a group buy is set up with 40 people
youd be looking at 507.50 a kit but i believe the group buy maybe would get 10 maybe 15 tops which in that case 10=2030 a kit and 15 = 1354 and to get around the 350 mark well need like 57 in a group buy which would never happen!!!!!

(this is something i made up on how much he wants to make a kit id would want to make more but anyway and he did say the molds cost 20k so this is kinda what you guys would expect)

20,000 for just molds? Wow, thats really gonna bump up the price. With this info you must HAVE TO sell more than...well before I say anything is 20K the total cost or just the variable cost alone?

Well not exactly sure if thats the total cost, variable cost, or just the fixed cost of making a mold, but it seems he would have to sell more than 4 to make a profit otherwise if there is not enough demand than he will not mass produce them or at least in the short run. But 20k for just ONE mold or is that the variable cost? I think thats the variable cost of production.

Here is what he said about the price:

The person that is building my molds said that they should have the OSV front lip done early this next week. Assuming that everything goes well, I'll start pulling pieces off it immediately thereafter. I've not decided how to price these units yet, so I think that I'll probably throw the first one on ebay, this will give you an opportunity to show me your true interest in the finished piece. The more bids it gets, the more we'll make. If it doesn't bid well however, these things will probably be on the expensive side of things. I'll update you when I know more. YES, I'll give you guys forewarning before I put these on ebay. Also, if things go well we'll have a web site up soon to make ordering easier for you guys.

Selling to a Canadian company was only a joke guys.

Just kidding. The results of our testing were not satisfactory. We had some structural problems with the piece at high speeds in windy conditions. As I've said before, we will not offer some "made in china" junk, we will only offer high quality pieces. We have re-designed our structural areas of concern and are in the finishing stages of this prototype and with any luck, this one won't crack at 100+ mph. Again, I appologize for not logging on sooner to update you, I've been at the shop working with my team trying to remedy the problems we had with the first piece. We're also in the early stages of a fiberglass hood with and without a ram-air feature, and we're working on some fiberglass fenders. We'll be releasing some paintable fiberglass spare tire covers late this month or early next month on ebay as well, I'll let you know when I do it. Our website is also just about complete so we won't have to do the ebay thing for long. Thank you all for your support and patients.

Hope this helps with the confusion out there.

i don't know why he thinks he can have a mold done before the final template piece is created... the mold is made from a finished product to mass produce the finished product... so therefore, if he is anywhere close to having molds made... he should be able to deliver pictures of a completed kit.

Sorry for any confusion on the $20,000 for molds, I should have been more specific. The $20,000 was for the entire prototyping process. The layout, the plug, and finaly a finished mold. How did I come up with the $20,000? $60 per hour x 100 billable hours (this was the billable agreement) x 3 sections (front, sides, and rear) = $18,000 plus materials. Grand total = $20,000. By the way, the prototyper picked up the gel coat tonight for the plug, so things are still on schedule. Thank you DOHC_tuner for your offer, it's quite obvious that you are well educated in the many aspects of profit/loss calculation. Let me get more established before I accept or deny your offer. Also, for those of you interested in having that other company build the OSV for $650 (with a group buy in of 10), make sure that you do your homework first. I don't want to detour you guys from doing it, because I'd love to see the OSV come to life (other than the fact that I'd be out 20 grand). But the world of composites is a big one and too often people buy based on looks alone and don't take into account all the other variables. I have said before and I will say again, we will not be building any cheap chinese chopper gun crap (don't think I haven't already looked into it) We will use only the best materials and create ONLY high quality pieces. I'd be glad to help with any questions you may have about the different types of materials used in the making of composites pieces.
