Sadly the throbbing bass didn't come on the scene until after I had kids (except for disco crap)

I went and saw Pink Floyd the year they released "The Dark Side of the Moon" (remember the "heartbeat?")
They had huge stacks of bass bins on the stage, like most bands, then we noticed they had arrays to either side of the audience seats as well. I thought, this is going to be too loud, let's move to the back. Went further back and sat down and.... yup, there were speaker boxes on the back wall, too. 4-channel quad surround sound. They recorded some of the best bass at that time.
For bass from that era, also like Emerson, Lake, and Palmer, Jan Hammer, Jo Jo Gunne, Spirit, Cat Stevens (for acoustic bass), BTO.
Most of that on vinyl will knock you out of your chair, too.... ah, the good old days.

Older tunes are going to hit harder because they have more dynamic range. And yes, it also depends on how well your system is tuned.

Why all hip hop? Honestly hardcore hits harder than anything I've put in my system. Today my most favorite song was It Dwells in Me by All That Remains. Had some old guy shoveling snow on the sidewalk shaking his head. Not to mention I passed a cop sitting at the school look up at me from a block away. Nothin better then a shitload of double bass.
