apparently they have 160 degree thermostats for our cars at summit racing. here is the part number HYP-1005

but what i was wondering was, is this too low?

160 is bad for the motors according to reports, engine temps can still spike frequently to about 220 or more, then dropping to 160 again. This happening repeatedly can cause mild or worse warpage in the cylinders and heads.

Best bet is probably a 180 with an upper end coolant like DEX-COOL (from GM dealer) or Texaco-Havalene from autoparts store, both of which are Ethylene Glycol based as opposed to Propylene Glycol. Eth. Glycol has higher heat tranfer ability, as well as higher quality additives for corrosion inhibiters than Prop. Glycol

what are the benefits/drawbacks of changing your thermostat temp?

Also, what is our stock one?

stock is 195 and the benefits of it are instead of your thermostat opening at 195 degrees it will open at 180 degrees, which will rotate the fluids more often keeping the engine a tad cooler.......

....which in turn keeps your fuel/air more dense, in turn making a tad more horsepower
