Gas Smell With A/c On

Guys, I need your help...

I started my car the other day and turned my A/C on and within seconds there was a strong smell of gasoline. I turned the air off, waited about 30 seconds and turned it back on. Still the gas smell. So i turned off my car let it sit for a few min and started again with the a/c on... no help. I live in TX and its too hott to be without a/c lol. But this doesnt happen everytime i turn on the a/c.

Does anyone know what's going on? I've never experienced anything like this b4.

The only repairs I've had done lately was having the catalytic converter replaced.

Thanks in advance for any and all help with this:)

and btw,... its an 01' 2.4

Look for a gas leak?

Umm are you parked when you do this? My cars exhaust gets into it when im parked but when I drive I get nothing.

The smell of raw gas it a leak as will have to be fixed ASAP.

Don't know how fuel is delivered on the 2.4 though. I had a "O" ring go bad in the fuel reg on the 3400

don't know why it would happen only when the a/c was engaged

ndottaylor 08-21-2008 05:03 PM

Both parked and driving. But it's not all the time.

Redog 08-21-2008 05:03 PM

Me thinks it's the only time he smelt it ;)

ndottaylor 08-21-2008 05:04 PM

do u know much it would cost if it is the "O" ring? and ill have it serviced tomorrow

Redog 08-21-2008 05:05 PM

It cost me about $40. only took 1/2 hour, if that's the problem

That was on the 3400 thou

why don't you open your hood, and take a damn look at the engine bay and see if there's fuel sprayed all over. it's not that hard. look around the injectors, see wetness.

replacing injectors/o-rings/fuel rail crap is not hard at all and can be done very quickly. the hardest part is figuring out how the heck to unplug the wires.

Redog 08-21-2008 05:07 PM

I did find the point of leaking pretty quick ;)

ndottaylor 08-21-2008 05:07 PM

That sounds good... but i dont know crap about working with an "O" ring though. hmmm...

Redog 08-21-2008 05:09 PM

In that case, leave it to a pro.

I know carbs not FI systems ;)

ndottaylor 08-21-2008 05:10 PM

i will do that

Midgear 08-21-2008 05:11 PM

lol.. replacing an O ring is like taking a tiny ass rubber band and putting it around the tip of your finger- its easy as pie.

ndottaylor 08-21-2008 05:15 PM

darnit... i wish i where more mechanically inclined...

Ditto. At least you could check for where the leak is coming if you dont want to repair it yourself. Open the hood, check around the fuel rail, start the car and try to notice if something is leaking somewhere.

Ion, those freaking plugs on the injectors.... UGH!

[ion] C2 08-21-2008 05:25 PM

srsly that's why i'm not putting my Cobalt injectors in yet
1. don't want to have another epic fuel splash
2. don't feel like figuring out how they come off again

meh i know fuel injection but no clue on carburetors, old school, FI ftw

ndottaylor 08-21-2008 05:41 PM

Ok, so i had my coils replaced a few months back... could it be something with that?

Redog 08-21-2008 06:17 PM

Unless they knocked something loose on the fuel side. The 2 are not connected ;)

If it was a coil probelm, it would run rich or lean and you'd smell it behind the car, not under the hood
