No it's not. The gain is there so you can match the input voltage from your radio. It's not a volume control.

Turn down you gain.

Post your amp model number. Were you meaning soundstream opposed to soundstorm? Some models of amps do have a gain knob that can be ran to the front. Ignore this. As stated before, gains are used to set the sensitivity of your amp input voltage. The frequency knob you stated may be a crossover. If so, it does not control volume. In all honesty, it sounds as though you need to take the car to a shop and install it correctly until you read up on car audio. You can be doing alot of things to cause the amp to go into protection. Your gains, sub wiring (list the sub model and ohm), and even your car wiring.

Your problem is a mismatched sub and amp. The sub you have is a dual 1 ohm sub. The lowest your amp is rated for is 2 ohm by 2 channels. This means that you can only use one channel off your amp and the sub must be wired in series to produce a 2 ohm load on the channel. Go to http://mobile.jlaudio.com/support_pages.php?page_id=161
to see how to wire it. You want the single dual voice coil in series option. The bad thing is that your amp is only rated for a max of 600 watts x2 at 2 ohm. Since you can only use one channel you will be seeing a max of 600 watts. Most likely your amp is going to RMS at 300 watts. I would suggest wiring it up and testing it out. Unfortunately, since your sub is suggested at 1100 watts RMS I seriously doubt you will get much volume. The other issue is that you will have to keep your amp maxed out to produce some decent sound. In these cases you can easily keep your amp at clipping and hurt the sub or amp after continuous use. My advice is sell the sub or the amp and get a better match.
