In response to the comment about 37.5w max bulbs, I agree that it is the safest way to go. However, I can personally attest that the GE 886 (General Electric) fog lamp bulb, which is rated at 50w, has worked in my car for 2+ years without any melting of harnesses or softening of the wire casing due to excessive current. I drive with the fog lamp switch always on, and have taken a few long road trips where the bulbs worked for hours at a time. I am a computer/electrical engineer so I know what burning electrical parts smell/look like, and I haven't had any issues.
I originally got the idea from another forum a while back. The 886 is used in the Cadillac Seville, Cadillac Eldorado, Chrysler Sebring and Dodge Stratus. Someone had said the same thing on that other forum that I am saying here. The 886 will fit perfectly without any modifications to the Alero fog lamp housing.
I think that some people have had issues with higher wattage cheap xenon bulbs, the off-brand types that look good until they burn out the connections. Those bulbs aren't always made well, and GE may have done a better job in designing this bulb than the cheap parts manufacturers did when making their HID wannabe xenon light solutions. Possibly the cheaper ones have higher resistance and therefore may produce more heat, but I couldn't say for sure. That's just what I would assume. Also the light from this bulb is your typical headlamp color, the yellowish hue that comes stock with the car. If you're looking for the whiter light like a Silverstar, this won't do it for you. However, these are about 20% brighter than the Silverstar (checked candle ratings for each) due to the higher wattage and have a 200 hour rated life vs. 100 hours, so they are supposed to last longer than the Silverstars.
I found this post when looking up Silverstar fog lamps, so I thought I would add my experience to the thread. I'm headed to the store to pick up a new bulb as the old one has lost connection in the filament.
They sell the 886 at Checker Auto Parts and many other places. They are cheap too! FYI here's a link (it asks for zip code then takes you to the bulb):
