As I was reading the other post about MPG, I noticed ppl are really getting more MPG out of their car than mine. I get around 430 kms from a full tank. Thats around 270 miles. For a 14 gallon tank, that gives me around 19-20 MPG. Its worse during winter. That is achieved with a mix of highway and city driving, maybe a bit more city.

I was wondering what could be the cause of such bad MPG for a 2.4L. Of course I thought about some things:

-Spark plugs (they have less than 20 000 miles, still always had same MPG)
-tire pressure (checked a few times, was ok at 32 psi)
-fuel filter (I never changed, will do)
-Air filter (need a clean, but still always had same MPG)
-O2 sensor (but I dont get any codes, and last time I made my mech check for A/F ratio, it was fine, but still got same MPG)
-compression check was fine last year (but still had same MPG)

What else could I be looking for and how could I test it?

most people on here have an air intake, which will increase that a little.

32PSI in the tires seems a bit low to me, even if it is spec.
Switch to synthetic oil if you haven't already.
Drive with gas mileage in mind.

32 is way too low. up ur psi to 40 or whatever the max load is on ur tires. u will get much better gas mileage u will just lose the soft feel. also the more psi the less chance to hydroplane because there is less tire sidewall in contact with the street and more tread contacting instead. there have been many many many (emphasis) articles on how much increasing ur tire pressure increases ur mpg.

isn't the risk of doing a blow out higher if you have more psi in your tires than recommended?

Yes, but only if your sidewall are damaged, or if your curb the tire too much.

With 32 PSI and a properly maintained stock car (besides FRAM air hog filter) I get 25-27 MPG with summer blend gas.

im getting 34 mpg right now

tires at 40 psi

and no intake on my 4cyl

Well mines the 3400...

I think the plugs make a decent difference. I use the copper core autolites and just replace them every year or two. $6 a year is fine with me.

I put some air yesterday while i was at the gas station: I put 40 psi in each tires. I had to hurry because I didn't have more change to make the air machine work again. Then after I checked on the tires for the max pressure they could take to find out it is 35 psi : DOH!

So I guess I'll have to check that again.
