Was pondering getting a new shift knob and came across a few that I was interested in. The current choices, listed in "considering the most first" order are:

http://tinyurl.com/9jnnp (eBay link)

I'm really curious about this - never seen one before - anybody have experience with them, or know if they will fit our cars?

http://tinyurl.com/a6alk (JC Whitney link)

I like the carbon fiber/black look, but I read somewhere that top button shift knobs won't work where the stock button is side - anybody know about that?

http://tinyurl.com/7lecd (eBay link)

Interesting, but I don't see a shift button anywhere

So, out of the three who knows which will definitely work, and out of those - which do y'all think are the purtiest.

Cheers,
Collin

i really like the second one. its very classy and i think is the only one that would work properly. neither of the other ones have a button, because they are made for gate transmissions where you don't need a button. that's why they wouldn't work right. however, if you install the knob with the button pressed down, you don't need a button, but it won't pass inspection. so, those are your options

Are there any harmful side effects to installing the knob with the button pressed down or is it like the cruise button where you can just jam a dime in there when it breaks? I can weasel my way past the inspection thing. On the second one - it has the top button... is that not a problem then with the Alero automatic having the side button? (Can't for the life of me remember where I read they aren't compatible)

Thanks,
Collin

not to mention you wouldn't be able to take the keys out of the ignition.

personally, i like the first one (and have considered getting it on many occasions...) but w/o a button to lock the stick, i wouldn't want my car shifter moving from one gear to the next w/o really hitting it....

kinda sucks.

the JC Whitney link is the only one that would really work on typical automatics.

As for the side-button thing, that is part of the stock knob, not a part of the shifter stem. You can get an aftermarket side-button knob, but it will be a pain in the ass to install it properly (ie: making sure it lines up so the button releases in park so you can get your key out) I used to have a side-button shifter, but it wore down because I had to adjust it constantly. I'm used to the top-button one I have know though. (It was wierd for the first few days....)
