I'm thinking about dropping a new engine into my alero, i just don't know much in the way of pricing and the best bang for the buck. If anybody knows anything on this topic it would be greatly appreciated if you could give me some insight on it. I'm acually just looking at labour costs, the type off engine that would be a recommended upgrade of the 2.4. i am a manual driver and would never drive anything else.

I just want to know some thoughs on basic pricing towards a new engine, u upgrading the rotors axles and suspension is also in my interest. when i'm done i want my car to ride on rails if thats possible.

Thank you for reading and hopefully u might have some insight for me.

There have been people who have done it, but I don't think they actually post here.

IMO: the 3800 is a realistic upgrade, not too much heavier, but has plenty more bang. Plus it would actually fit in the engine compartment.

As for some overkill overhaul, a Northstar V8 could go in there...but with hardly any room for anything else.

not to jack the thread or anything, but its not functionally reasonable to "extend" the front end, but is it possible?

Good luck finding a manual FWD tranny that will take that abuse. :Noooo:

It would probably just be easier to take the 2.4 build it for boost then blow. You should be able to get ~400 hp out of it. for about the same or less $$.

Are the new GrandPrix's available in manual? The G6 is. That would handle it well enough.

Of course all of this is so much custom fabrication and worth a billion times more than the car itself so we all know it will never happen.

^ that's why swaps are to be done for project cars, not daily driven cars. typically money isn't an object for hobbies, and if money just ain't there, the project goes on hiatus.

There's almost never going to be a simple bolt-on swap, not unless the engine/tranny combo was an available option on the platform.

I don't know if they are available but the alero had the manual tranny as an option in '99 (and even in 01 on the v6) problem was the factory never built any on the V6 and not on the 2.4 until late 00-01, and would not take orders for them either. I tried repeatedly. So if you can find a GP, or G6 with a V6 manny BUY it. cuz its gonna be cheaper and more reliable than swapping it into the ho.

If you absolutely must have an alero with a manual and a different engine get a stock 2.4 manual and swap in a 3.4 with a 90-92 getrag 282 tranny and a DHP PCM or get a 3.4 pcm with a hptuners tuner. That would be the most practical with the best bang for the buck. Since the 3.4 will drop in, the 282 should bolt up and the PCM choices offer all the tunning you need. Then you have all the parts that the 3.4 offers including some boost options and the tranny should be good for close to 300hp with the right clutch. Just my humble ramblings :alcoholic:

Of course with the right parts selection you can do the same thing to a 2.4...
