My friend told me that I could manually shift through my gears and downshift when im going to stop. Does this eff with my trans? Is this bad for my car? Sorry if its a newbie question but I never knew I could shift through.

Let the computer do the work unless you need it...there is a reason that drive works automatically.

You aren't going to hurt anything by manually shifting your trans. About all you are going to hurt is you fuel economy. Do what you want.

i feel that the ONLY time anyone should do that is if there having a tough time up a hill, remove gas pedal and shift it down for a bit more power and when your clear, again, remove gas pedal and shift back up........even on a hill i dont touch it.
if your friend has an alero and hes doing that.............

as long as you aren't going really fast (50+) and throw it into first, you should be fine. And never flip from a forward gear to reverse while moving. That said, you'll be fine to do it, but it'll kill your performance.

(without pulling a 180 that is)

it's impossible to to flip it to reverse... if the car is moving forward and you try to put it in reverse it will just grind to beat hell... manually downshifting dsoes cause a little more wear and tear on the tranny becasue the pressure spikes if you downshift too early... upshifting doesn't do much but screw with gas mileage... if you are doing a lot of around city driving where you hardly break 45 then you can take it out of overdrive so when you accelerate again off a coast then it doesn't have to take it out for you (just saves the tranny work)... overdrive is for highway use when you are going faster so the rpm's stay farther down than in 3rd gear...

There is no point even from a performance standpoint to shift the trans manually up the gears. The transmission will automatically shift at the red line if you have it floored, so what is the point. The only time I manually shifted was when my brakes were bad so I didn't have to use them so much.

the trans will auto shift even if you have it in 1st once it hits redline.
but like coupe said, sometimes its cool to hear the exhaust (if you have a performance setup)

When i cruise the strip (5-25 mph) i sometimes drop her down in 1st or 2nd. With headers and highflow cat and SLP cat-back its loud and mean as hell sounding, my girl loves it when i do that.

I would agree, don't throw it into reverse. Now on the throwing it into a much lower gear at high speeds, well you will add some wear and tear on your tranny if you are always doing this, but because it is an auto it will only shift into the lowest gear that will not redline the engine. Usually I will down shift when coming up to stops (because I like the sound of my magnaflow) but the tranny will not down shift until my RPMs are down to about 3500. Upon down shift my RPMs hit about 5000.

Okay, now have you ever really tried this? If you have your auto in 1st and hit red line you will simply bounce off the redline, almost like you bounce off the speed limiter, I know because I have accidently did this. If you have your auto in 2nd upon take off then you will automatically shift out of 1st when you redline but will not pass 2nd gear if you don't shift it into 3rd or Drive.

Man, you have get taste in rims and all but I need to call you on this one. I agree with you on the upshift, but I will usually shift down before I go into a corner so I can power out of it. The last thing you would want to happen on a corner that you are speeding through is for your auto trans to shift (down or up) when your not expecting it. Especially on a loose or slick one. What do you think?
