wtf....clacking and no compression
time for a top end rebuild or what?
compression numbers from #1-4
150-90-60-30 psi
hmm...ok, had clacking in the top end, figured might be cams right...well, doin cam swap, everything was already perfect in there...so it wasn't the culprit...could it be power steering pump doin the noise, or am i gettin actual piston slap goin on?
car has 193 000kms (118 000 miles approx)...religious oil changes and maintenance done...
this is freakin depressing...any input is greatly appreciated

if those are your compression number either 1 of 2 things............head gasket is bad or rings are bad.
with noise the power steering poump will make a bad noise if almost empty.

yeah, but the power steering is more of a growling noise, not a clacking.

how bad is the blow by of your motor. if the rings are really bad you should have a lot of blow by. also does it sound like you have a vacuum leak anywhere? does the motor get hot. sometimes when headgasket goes it can bleed over into the water passages and cause your motor to overheat.
sometimes we just have to admit it's the worse case.........never like it but have too............lol

Not necessarily. To properly diagnose what is causing the low compression there is at least a few more steps. To rule either in or out the rings you need to add about 3/4 of a teaspoon of oil to each cylinder. It sounds really weird but is ok. After you add the oil, rerun the compression test on each cylinder. If your compression comes up its the rings. It it doesnt come up it could be your gasket or the valves are not sealing properly which could be a result of carbon deposits or worn guides. Hope this helps.

its not that bad yet...its just starting to be noticeable...doesn't sound like vacuum leak anywhere...engine stays nice and cool too....i'll put the new gaskets in cuz i know it was leaking a bit on the bottom side of the valve cover i guess you could call it...
again, thanks for the input

i guess it would help if pat had at least the foggiest idea on what he was doing...he's just tearing the engine apart, buying pieces and finding them inside the engine when he opens it up and then replacing them...

well eff it...i'm not rebuilding this motor...i'm buying a lower mileage one for cheap...i'll just put my goodies onto it, and when this one leaves me stranded i'll drop in the fresh one....it'll be easier this way and i can take my time(kinda) and do it right
