our coolant cap is the pressure of the system. If you ever looked at it, the cap says like 15lbs rating. Since our radiator doesn't have a pressure cap like others do.. the cap on the reservior bottle takes the place of one. The cap opens and closes for the vent/overflow tube on the bottle. (the tube that doesn't connect to anything located next to the cap).
when you have a pressurized system, it raises or lowers the boiling temperature. Since you said that your cap came off. that could be a problem. Doesn't hurt to change the cap for a few bucks. Since the design of the caps are shitty they break easy.
