What kind of music do you listen to most shackney?
*Edit* I guess it really doesn't matter what music you listen to, I would go with the 12" Type R's. Reason for me saying that is that you are getting a better range out of the 12" (of course only 1 more Hz) but who knows. Either sub would work fine so....up to you man.

definately go with the 12's, 10" type r's arent good for rap. I tried one out and ended up selling it after about a week

those type R's are proven to handle 1000 watts, i would prolly just buy on and make a big ported box with 1200.1 and call it a day. they can hit high 140s in the right box

i had 2 12" type R's. was going to sell them. Wasn't too pleased. Going with 2,3, or 4 10's. I listen to techno though. Sharpness is what I am looking for. However, those subs got stolen... thanksgiving night this year.

i have a pair of 12" type r and one of those gimmicky boxes that can be ported or not. I know that the ports arent set up right and thats why it might sound poor with them. But imo the type r's sound way better in a sealed box.

I have 2 12" Type S subs in a HUGE Baseworx box (ported) (800 watts) with a 800watt Alpine V-Power mono amp, and 2 alpine 6*9's Type S speakers and 2 alpine 4 1/2 Type S speakers in the front, running off of my Alpine deck, all together pushing 1000 watts and I listen to pretty much everything from rap, techno, rave, rock, little country....but they are awsome...wish I could afford the Type S but I think next month im getting possably 2 Type X subs and 3000watt amp(s). lol, nvr turn up the volume all the way if u have type x's, say good bye to battery, backwindow etc.

Sealed boxes provide a flatter response in general. Thats what your seeing as better sound, its more linear.
As for output, Mark Potts did 154 with a single 12" Type R.
So the subs are very capable. As noted, its in the box.
If you want your sub to fart one note, or you want them more musical.
Its car audio. Not rocket science.
I got a member on my board thats very happen with the Type R. Seems to be a rather stout sub that can do good things.
As for boxes, I believe he is reccomending 3 cubes tuned to 30Hz, after displacement. It would appear to be more musical than gain oriented @ 30 hz. If your listening mainly to newer rap with high Hz bass, you could tune higher. Say 38Hz..
