Some questions about Audio--barely NSFW
Hey all,
Ok so I have the 2001 Alero GLS sedan with the 8 speaker premium sound and CD, tape Head unit. Not the mansoon I keep hearing about I don't think since I don't have anything mansoony on my head unit. I just purchased the vehicle this week and was wondering if you could explain the 2 ohms thing to me. I was also wondering since this comes with an amp if anyone could post what was run by the head unit and what was run by the amp speaker wise. Thanks in advance I could look I' am sure but I don't wanna be all crawling in my trunk and stuff since I live in an apartment complexe LOL. I can see it now my neighbors walking out seeing me crawling in my trunk and going " Oh look it's a tweaker.." LOL. Thanks in advance.
P.S.
For a stock set up that system fookin pounds:<). If I posted somthing stupid please forgive the nubness.

first off.. you need to find out IF you have the monsoon amp.
just pop your trunk and look under the carpet on the driver's side (i'm pretty sure its on that side) behind the wheelwell. if there is an amp back there... thats the monsoon.
i believe it powers all 4 corners (the 8 speakers) if there isn't one back there, then you have the normal radio version, to which, the radio powers the speakers.
and what makes this so nsfw? we have word filters... nsfw means you posted some kinda semi nude pick, or some link that could get us fired for clicking 17 times.

Basically if you have an amplified stock system to replace it you will need to replace all speakers needed (only 4), the deck and redo all the wiring.
If your not up to the task pay a shop. Not up to paying DONT TOUCH IT THEN. YOu will only create a nightmare otherwise.

Hey,
I' am sure I have an AMP because this thing hits so hard I have shaken peoples cars in my apartments hard enough to set off their alarms :<). I will look though to make sure. So you're saying I could have the Monsoon without it saying Monsoon on the Head unit yes? Basically I' am just looking to replace some speakers in the rear deck I think. Every other speaker seems fine. The rears are cracking a bit though so I was thinking of replacing em. The head unit is fine for my needs atm. Any work done will be done in a shop as have had enough DIY and am now lazy in my old age LOL.
As for the NSFW thing better to be safe then sorry. Some of my on line gaming buddies work for the Government and even the hint of cursing can get them in trouble so I wanted to be safe here since this is only my 2nd post. Thanks for the replies.

"The factory amplifier sends bass and treble through separate sets of wires to the speakers. You can replace the factory radio with an aftermarket receiver, and the factory amplifier will still drive the rear factory speakers. However, if you want to replace the factory speakers, you'll have to replace the factory radio. You'll also have to bypass the factory amp by cutting and splicing into the factory wire harness."
Blah are you freaking kidding me?

lmao $54 for that POS.
Anyone who tells you to use the factory amp is an idiot, period. They all suck, period.
Either replace it all or replace what needs to be replaced with stock. Anything in between never works out good. Whatever you do, DO NOT HACK THE WIRES. Dont let anyone else hack the wires. You will so regret it if you do. Just run new wires and be done with it, the right way.

This is a crazy thread...you asked and tried to answer your own question. Better in the long run to just replace everyting, and its not that bad of a job to do if you have wired a vehicle before. If you like the stock system and have some things that need to be replace then like Ryan said stay stock. If you want alittle more then replace the head unit and all 4speakers and the tweeters...Simple.

i think the only bi-amp acceptable speakers (of any quality) anyone has found would be the soundstream tarantula series.
usually have to be ordered online, there aren't very many dealers....

Thanks for the responses. I'll check out the Tarantulas Cherrington thanks. As a sidenote I did talk to a buddy of mine that works for a GM dealer and he can get me the speakers for $35 a piece if I decide to go that way.

^^that would be very true but unless hes going to add an aftermarket amp it would be pointless to run aftermarket speakers with that monsoon amp. Plus you would have to cut the factory wires to make it work.

^says who? let me re-itterate. the tarantula series speakers from soundstream have separate jacks for the woofer and tweeter. he can cut them off the stocks and reapply then to the new speakers, w/o losing anything.

I agree with Cherrinton here atm. I am happy with the stock system actually. The speakers are just old and I was pounding Lincoln parks sick of it and some Matisyahu a bit loud and heard some cracking. I like the stock set-up. It's really all I need atm. I just wanted to replace the speakers in the rear if they were cracking. I'll just have to remember not to turn it up to full blast :<). I do appreciate the responses though. I just found it a bit ridiculous to have to replace an entire system for 2 speakers.

That amp only pushes like 200watts per channel so whats that like 50 per and thats not RMS so depending on which ones he goes with then he could possible be under powering them. The 01 and above use that rear dual voice coil setup so on each speaker, both voice coils are running off a seperate channel in that amp there's a set of highs and a set of lows, so I believe that there really wouldn't be any gain in adding aftermarket speakers to the stock system. IMO

I'm just saying that I don't see the need to add aftermarket speakers to a stock setup if you want to run stock then just replace the speakers with stock IMO.

Whats the Ohm rating on the Monsoon speakers? The Sound Streams?
Case rested.
You gotta remember that factory amp is matched for the speakers at their impedances. That are what? 2, 6 8 Ohms... Sometimes 10. Its always goofy...
A little crackling is probably just distortion. Turn it down and all is good. When they blow or the surrounds go, you will know it. Pretty confident in that... lol.
