Question Headlights Went Out

Hey guys, I hope I'm in the right section to ask this.

My girlfriend and I aren't very knowledgeable of cars so was hoping someone here could maybe shed a light, no pun intended, on what we need to do.

Basically she started her '99 Alero the other night and the automatic headlights did not come on. She then tried the manual switch on the steering wheel and they still would not come on. Her break, parking, high-beams (which as you know is a separate light), fog lights, and dash-board all work -- it's just the headlights that suddenly don't.

So what we tried doing was going into the fuse box under the hood and we saw there was a "relay" for automatic head lights. I switched it with the horn relay since it works and they seemed to be exactly the same, but the headlights still won't come on. We also looked at what appear to be the fuses for both lights and the wire in them looks perfectly fine. I assume the lights work fine as it would be quite something to have them both go out independently.

Totally lost on what to do next, and we have very little money so was hoping for a fix-it-yourself solution. If one isn't available, I understand.

Thanks in advance for any help.

coulda had a stroke of bad luck and they both burnt out at the same time.. sounds like a relay or fuse problem though..

check the plugs, wires, and bulbs and let us know!
