Cat Quick-Fix?
My cat is bad but I don't want to replace it because its not worth the money. So what I did was, disconnect the exhaust flange, and jam a crowbar through the cat a few times to hollow out a passageway in the middle. But now that I can hear those rattling loose cat chunks going down the tailpipe, I didn't know if the chunks might clog up something behind the cat. Anyone?

I really have a feeling this is not a good idea. If you're going this route.
Pull it off, beat the chunks out of it, and put it back.
Or straight pipe and add a resonator, but I'll get bashed for mentioning that.

if you can't afford a new cat right now, straight-pipe it until you can. as long as you sincerely have the intention of doing so, I see nothing wrong with it. Ity's better than letting all that junk clutter and clog up your muffler.

well duh think, what's behind the catalytic converter? exhaust piping, a resonator, and a muffler.
it'll be rattling around in the muffler now...

I 'COULD' fix it right, or take the cat out, I just don't want to thats all. As long as the exhaust isn't leaking, thats all I really care about.
After poking thru the cat, I did start the car and rev it to get most the large debris out before I hooked the exhaust back together. But every once in awhile I can hear a little piece go down the pipes, and since I don't know what is involved with the internals of the resonator or muffler, thats why I asked. Not everyone knows what the inside of a resonator or muffler looks like ya know.

Now you will be pulling your exhaust from the cat back off to get the chucks out. Smooth move.

our resonator is even simpler than that. It's basically a pipe with little ridges punched in (like a straight through muffler, just smaller)...unlikely that debris from the cat would clog the resonator. The Muffler on the other hand....could be tricky depends on the muffler you have.

I don't really care, but thanks for your input. I got the information I needed, and the car drives fine for now, so I'm still happy with not spending hundreds of $ to replace the cat.

What is the milage on your car? If it is under a certain amount it could have been covered under warranty.

The federal warranty is 8 years/80,000 miles.

Its got 130k. Anyways, I'm not worried about it. I have to take it back apart to put a new flange gasket in which I didn't have at the time, so maybe I'll put some compressed air in the tailpipe while its apart to see what comes back out. I doubt it will be much.
