Mixing paint for tail light tint.
Exactly how much black do you mix in with the clear to get a nice tint without it being black?

None.
You go get yourself a can of VHT Nite Shades and spray on 2-3 light coats, depending on how dark you want them. Then you can spray clear over them so the tint doesn't wear off with the weather.

I looked for that stuff but couldn't find it anywhere local. I have access to a paint shop though so I figured I'd walk over there and spray 'em once work slows down. Already have the lights out of the car and on my desk.

I couldn't find the VHT here also. I used 2 - 3 thin coats of smi gloss black krylon then had my painter at my shop mix up some clear. I put 3 coats of clear on. Looks great. Don't forget the Adhesion promoter!

Niteshade looks like complete sh** compared to spraying the black/clear mix.
Niteshade has orange peel and is dull, even after sanding/ buffing, plus looks lsightly purple it seems to me... taillights tinted with a real spraygun are glossy and true black
niteshade:

black/clear mix

I'm over it. Nite shade came out just fine on my car. I never wanted fully blacked out lights anwyays, just a darker tint.

I dont really know much about paint, but I would start off with just the clear in the container your going to use, then mix more and more black into the container of clear until you get the desired darkness. The more dark you want it, the more black youll need.

I'd like to do this but I know my dad would have something to say being that your not the most visible during the day and he nearly hit some kit with really dark tail lights cause he couldn't tell that the brake lights were illuminated.

If you're concerned and want to do it as a trial, you can put the lights in black Pantyhose.
all it takes is 2 sets of the thigh high ones, and proper positioning. Re-install.
This works great as a temp thing and apparently holds well. i've heard of it being done but haven't done it myself. you just need to be delicate as to not get a run in the pantyhose.
but it apparently lasts awhile, like, you can do it in the spring, remove it in the fall.
might cost you 10 bucks?

lol I can't justify buying panty hose but I did see the thread about that I was surprised that from a distance it looked good but I'm sure up close you'd notice.
