Creeking Brakes

probably not safe but when I hit the brakes I hear a soft creek, but when I opened the door and pushed the brake the sound was louder

It sounds like it's comming for the rear. What could it be? I've never heard of creeking for needing new brakes, but I guess it's possible. I'll check more later.

my brakes creek too. i have heard it is our calipers. they have not been a problem for me. but fixing as soon as you can wouldn't be a bad idea

I have creaky brakes. Had them for a while. My brake guy says its cool, but i call BS. I think its caused by the warped GM rotors. But thats just my idea......

Should be ok, pull the wheels off...

And squeeling can be an indication of needing pads... thats why they invented squeelers... or those little tabs of metal that hit the rotor when you hit the brake and are low on pad....

Yeah they aren't squeeling right now.

I'm going to change my pads and rotors next month anyway.

The creeking is usually an indication that the caliper piston needs greased. Think about a brake setup.... there's really not much else that could "creek" except maybe the pedal itself. I would just take 'em to a parts store and exchange 'em for rebuilds.

I first heard the brake creek when I was in the McD's drive thru. Everytime I press the brake up and down while at a stop, it would creek really bad. My GM tech told me it was the little retainer clips that hold the pad in the caliper bracket that needs to be lubed. AFter they done that, I had no more creaking. The one that causes the loud creaking is the clip that is in the top of the caliper itself. Just pop it out and lube it up and that will fix it for a while. I am sure it will come back, but I now know exactly what I need to do to fix it.

I found the sound

It's comming from the right front wheel. My neighbor saw me looking at the brake and he said that it's the travel since the pad is worn down a bit.

I guess I'm buying 2 sets of pads next month <_<

i have the same problem, i fixed it once for a short time just by taking the stuff apart, mines the left front though, annoying as hell. havent gotten around to looking at it again. the car does still stop the same

i have the sqeaking problem, like if im stopped and pump the brake a couple times... but it just recently escalated. now when i initially apply brakes while rollin, i hear a ding sound, just once. then theres a rubbing noise in synch with the wheel roatation as i either coast or slow down. The metal on metal ding is what really has me worried.. its like somethings loose in there!

I'm into final exams in a week or two so i'm just parking her till and plan on dealing with it affter. *crap*

i got the creaking too, not squealling, just sounds like ting ting ting when i step on the brake pedal. I had a feeling it was movement of the caliper. Someone said they lubed a clib and the sound went away,... more details on that please. thanx

Do the TSP for lubing the calipers. Mine did it and I used the lube the TSP says to get and walla, no more creaking!!! :thumbsup:

Yeah i had this problem for a long time couldn't figure it out. Saw an earlier thread about creaking breaks and TSB that was posted. Took it to the shop to have the pistons lubed. They found that one of my sliders was nearly rusted shut. :o But after all lubed up, i break smoothly without a sound..finally

creaking is def. the piston inside caliper. mine did it to. easy it fix. buy a new caliper for like 35.00 at murrays or try to regrease it up. i regreased mine but it only lasted like a month then came back.

He's right. My '01 had this problem a few times, the dealership ended up replacing both front calipers, and I had to have the rears serviced twice in one year. I offloaded her right around the time they started acting up again.

That is why I am soooo glad to have rear drums again. They may look kinda poopty and may not have the same stopping power as discs, but I am not a race car driver anyhow. Anyone who lives in my kind of conditions knows how difficult it is to keep rear calipers in good shape. WAY to costly!
